Jason Statham’s $162 Million Sequel Just Took A Step Towards Revealing Action Hero’s Backstory

The Beekeeper 2 is nearing production, and the first behind-the-scenes details about the sequel are being released. The film is still in development and hasn’t begun filming yet, but a detail revealed by the film’s director may have given a glimpse into how the sequel is going to handle its central character.

The first Beekeeper was a huge hit, earning a ton of money at the box office while also managing to find a mᴀssive amount of success when it eventually went to streaming. Jason Statham has always been a box office draw, and his recent projects, while not mega-blockbusters, have been strong additions to his filmography.

The Beekeeper was directed by David Ayer, but the sequel is being helmed by Timo Tjahjanto, who has also recently taken over Nobody 2. Tjahjanto has revealed the central filming location for The Beekeeper 2, and it could offer a clue as to where the sequel is going.

The Beekeeper 2 Filming In London Could Help Show Adam Clay’s Backstory

In an interview with MovieWeb, Tjahjanto revealed that he has been scouting filming locations in England, which is obviously where Statham, and the character of Adam Clay, are from. If parts of the film are going to be set there, then it would make a lot of sense for the movie to explain more of Clay’s backstory.

Worldwide Box Office

A Working Man

$100 million

The Beekeeper

$162 million

Expend4bles

$51 million

Meg 2: The Trench

$397 million

Fast X

$714 million

With that being said, it is important to note that The Beekeeper 2 filming in London doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be set there at all. The first movie was also sH๏τ entirely in England, but was set primarily in the USA, so the sequel could very much be following the same playbook.

However, exploring more of Clay’s backstory would be a great avenue for the sequel to go down, and shooting on location in London would be an easy way to achieve that. The Beekeeper organization likely has some kind of influence in the city, and would probably take on more of an active role in the story of Beekeeper 2.

This is especially pertinent because we didn’t get a very in-depth look at Clay’s plans after the ending of The Beekeeper, which showed him escaping into the sea with his diving gear. He could end up anywhere, and after the events of the first movie, it would make sense for him to return to what he already knows.

As sequels generally have the task of increasing the stakes and tension of the previous film, moving to a new environment would be an excellent way to make The Beekeeper 2 feel like a worthy continuation. The return to filming in London is a great opportunity that the filmmakers should absolutely capitalize on, and hopefully, they already know that.
