Sydney Sweeney’s New Crime Thriller Loses Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score Ahead Of Release

Sydney Sweeney‘s ascent began in earnest in 2018, when she captured audiences’ attention in the nostalgic teen dramedy Everything Sucks!, delivered a haunting turn in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and embodied a troubled young woman in HBO’s Sharp Objects. Soon after, she made her feature film debut in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, portraying a member of the infamous Manson family.

Her career surged to greater heights with two acclaimed HBO shows – the raw, emotionally charged Euphoria and the satirical social drama The White Lotus season 1 – earning Emmy nominations for each. In 2023, Sweeney demonstrated remarkable versatility, portraying the тιтular whistleblower in the tense HBO film Reality while also showcasing her comedic charm in the blockbuster rom-com Anyone But You.

By 2024, Sweeney had expanded her range even further, stepping into both the superhero genre with Madame Web and psychological horror with Immaculate. Sweeney’s upcoming slate remains packed, with roles in Americana, Ron Howard’s survival thriller Eden, and The Housemaid, all releasing in 2025.

Americana Loses Its Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score Ahead Of Release

Americana has lost its perfect Rotten Tomatoes score ahead of its release in just a few days. Written and directed by Tony Tost, the creator of Damnation and showrunner for Poker Face season 2, the upcoming crime thriller follows numerous individuals in a small South Dakota town whose lives become violently intertwined in a struggle over a costly ghost shirt.

The movie stars Sydney Sweeney alongside Emmy winner Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird), Halsey, Eric Dane (Euphoria), Zahn McClarnon (Dark Winds), Gavin Maddox Bergman, Derek Hinkey, Simon Rex (Red Rocket), Toby Huss, Emmy nominee Harriet Sansom Harris (Hacks), and Donald Cerrone.

Americana, which initially debuted to a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, has now dipped down to 77% ahead of its theatrical release on August 15. The movie only has 13 reviews at the time of writing, so its score is subject to fluctuate even more as more are published.

What Americana’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For The Movie

Americana premiered at South by Southwest way back in March 2023, where it debuted to a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score with 8 reviews. It’s lost that perfect score now that it’s being reviewed more ahead of its theatrical release, though Americana‘s Rotten Tomatoes score still represents mostly positive reviews.

Critics are praising its quirky characters, grounded humanity, and engaging performances, especially Paul Walter Hauser’s, calling it a fresh and heartfelt modern Western. Others find it sluggish, derivative, and shallow, finding fault with its weak writing and missed potential. Overall, Americana is seen as both charmingly offbeat and frustratingly uneven.
