Tron: Ares‘ age rating has been revealed, and it breaks a long-standing franchise tradition. Directed by Joachim Rønning, the third installment in the Tron franchise stars Jared Leto as Ares, a sophisticated program that embarks on a dangerous mission in the real world.
The first franchise installment hit theaters back in 1982, and it was followed by a sequel in 2010. Both of these movies were rated PG for their sci-fi action sequences, and it was previously unclear whether the upcoming Tron: Ares would follow in their footsteps.
Per FilmRatings.com, Tron: Ares has earned a PG-13 from the MPA, making it the first installment in the franchise to not be rated PG. The film was given this new rating for “violence/ action” only. Check out a chart below comparing the three installments:

What This Means For Tron: Ares
It should be noted that the PG-13 rating wasn’t officially introduced until 1984, two years after Tron‘s release, meaning the first installment couldn’t have earned that rating regardless of its content. The film, however, is relatively tame in terms of its violence and action, and a PG seems fitting.
For Ares, the PG-13 rating is a sign that audiences can expect some more intensity when it comes to action compared to the previous two installments. At least part of this could be due to the move from the digital world of Tron City and The Grid to the real world.
By taking place in The Grid, the previous Tron movies have been more removed from reality. Taking place in the real world, however, could raise the stakes and make the action feel more grounded and realistic, particularly for younger audiences.
PG-13 is essentially the norm for big-budget blockbuster fare these days, as it allows studios to reach a wide audience while delivering intense action set pieces. Ares could benefit from this rating, and a slightly more edgy approach could end up making this new installment a hit after Tron: Legacy‘s mixed reception.
Our Take On Tron: Ares’ PG-13 Rating
Legacy‘s action didn’t suffer from the film’s PG rating, but a PG-13 will allow Ares to push the envelope a bit. Trailers have already teased that the film could end up being a little darker than past installments, and a PG-13 could fit with this new direction.
Action is obviously a major part of every Tron movie, but the intensity of the action won’t matter if the story and characters – especially Leto’s Ares – are not compelling. Legacy earned mixed reviews from critics, and the lackluster response critically and commercially is surely part of why it has taken 15 years for Ares to arrive.
If Tron: Ares can deliver a satisfying experience and become a hit, it could mark a new era for a franchise that will likely be put back on the shelf if the film under-delivers. If the new movie breaks through, audiences can probably expect more PG-13 returns to the world of Tron in the years ahead.
