M. Night Shyamalan’s Remain has just gotten a major update. This next Shyamalan film has been described as a romantic supernatural thriller, but the full plot has not been revealed yet. It is based on an idea the director conceived with author Nicholas Sparks, who wrote a novel of the same name to be published this October.
Remain stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Julie Hagerty, Phoebe Dynevor, Tracy Ifeachor, Ashley Walters, Maria Dizzia, Hannah James, and Kieran Mulcare. It is currently set for theatrical release on Oct. 23, 2026. Both Sparks and Shyamalan are producers on Remain, alongside co-producers Marc Bienstock, Ashwin Rajan, and Theresa Park.
According to makeup artist Donald Mowat via Instagram, Remain has now finished filming. The creator talked about the “beautiful summer” he and the Remain team spent in Providence, Rhode Island, in the United States. He clearly states: “That’s a wrap!“

Mowat posted this pH๏τo alongside images of two actors from the film, Gyllenhaal and Dynevor. The duo does not appear to be in costume, thus still concealing the nature of their characters.
What This Filming Update Means For Remain
Remain wrapping filming keeps it on track to be finished on time for its release next year, as it is being given over 12 months for post-production after principal pH๏τography is complete. This should be enough time for the team to edit and render any visual effects that a supernatural movie like this would require.
In the meantime, Shyamalan is still choosing to keep a lot secret about the film. This will change this fall, when the Sparks novel is released on Oct. 7. While it is also unknown just how close to each other the stories are, the novel is likely to have the same general plot as the movie, and thus it will have a bearing on the film’s arc.
Our Take On Remain Finishing Filming
Remain is fascinating as it will likely step outside Shyamalan’s genre niche. While he has gone the more sci-fi and supernatural route a few times in the past, the director is better known for his work in the horror genre. Romance is definitely not a category closely ᴀssociated with Shyamalan, making this film an interesting venture for him.
Curiously, the movie is still set for release close to Halloween, prime-time spooky season. This could be a disadvantage, as it is a time when people are more likely to want to see horror movies. Even so, Remain wrapping filming is building excitement for the film as it heads into its next phase.
