The trailer for Marty Supreme has arrived. The upcoming A24 movie, which is set to premiere in theaters on December 25, was directed by Josh Safdie (Uncut Gems, Good Time), marking the first feature that he did not co-direct with his brother Benny Safdie (whose own solo directorial feature debut is the upcoming MMA drama The Smashing Machine).
The movie features A Complete Unknown star Timothée Chalamet in the lead role as fictional ping-pong great Marty Mauser, alongside a star-studded ensemble cast that includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Fran Drescher, Abel Ferrara, Kevin O’Leary, Penn Jillette, and Sandra Bernhard.
A24 has now unveiled the official trailer for Marty Supreme. It opens with Marty, wearing his signature mustache, on the phone chatting with a movie star (played by Paltrow) and proving that he’s also a performer by asking her to open her newspaper, where an article calls him “the chosen one.”
Although that scene is comedic, it quickly becomes clear that Marty is very intense about ping-pong and is willing to sacrifice everything for success, because the game is popular overseas, and he views it as his ticket to glory. A series of intense scenes of gameplay and interpersonal drama then play out, scored by a remix of “Forever Young.”

What This Means For Marty Supreme
Ultimately, the trailer does not necessarily offer insight into the reason why Marty Supreme is the most expensive A24 movie of all time. Its reported budget of $70 million significantly exceeds the independent production company’s previous high, which was the reported $50 million that they spent on Alex Garland’s Civil War.
2024’s Civil War, which starred Kirsten Dunst, was set in a dystopian near-future where the United States is a war zone.
Unlike the Garland movie, Marty Supreme does not have any intense action sequences that would obviously inflate the budget. However, the star-studded cast showcased by the trailer could be the core reason that the movie is so expensive.
In addition to featuring Chalamet, who is one of the biggest stars of the modern era, the fact that the cast includes Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow in her first major onscreen movie role since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame could have upped the price considerably.
Our Take On The Marty Supreme Trailer
A budget of $70 million means that A24 is taking a huge risk, because it makes it so that Marty Supreme’s break-even point could be as high as $175 million. That is a total that even their highest-grossing movie of all time, Everything Everywhere All At Once ($144.9 million worldwide), didn’t hit.
However, Timothée Chalamet is an immensely bankable star, as he has not had a movie since before 2023’s Wonka gross lower than $140 million. His charismatic performance, as showcased by the Marty Supreme trailer, could be A24’s key to success, drawing an untold number of viewers to theaters for his unusual new movie.
