New Addams Family Movie In Development, Details Reveal Whether It’s Connected To Netflix’s Wednesday Series

The legacy of The Addams Family will continue to grow, as a new animated movie adaptation of the story is now coming. Presently, the biggest mainstream Addams Family property is, of course, Netflix’s Wednesday, created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and revolving around Jenna Ortega’s ᴅᴇᴀᴅpan, mystery-solving Wednesday Addams.

The first half of Wednesday season 2 was recently released to an enthusiastic fanbase. Before the hit show’s 2022 premiere, Hollywood saw two animated movie adaptations, with 2019’s The Addams Family and 2021’s The Addams Family 2. Both installments were poorly reviewed but performed decently at the box office.

However, speaking with ᴅᴇᴀᴅline on the Crew Call podcast, Gough and Millar revealed that they are working on a new animated reboot movie of The Addams Family for Amazon MGM Studios, which will not be connected to Wednesday or the previous animated movies. The pair is collaborating with the Addams Foundation’s Kevin Miserocchi, as well as Gail Berman and John Glickman.

Gough said the following to Crew Call:

We’re working on it with Amazon MGM and with Kevin Miserocchi who runs the Addams Foundation, he knew Charles Addams and the keeper of the Addams flame, and with Gail Berman and John Glickman. We’re rebooting the animated film franchise. So it won’t have anything to do with the two films before it, nor is it connected with this show. It will be a brand new Addams feature. There’s not really much we can say about it, because it’s in the very early stages.

What The New Addams Family Movie Means For The Franchise

Various adaptations of The Addams Family have come and gone over the years; the premise and characters will likely forever capture the attention of creators who want to put their own spin on it. Whether this particular go-around turns out to be a forgettable venture or a new mainstay of the Addams Family will not be seen for years, with the movie in early development.

The fact that Wednesday‘s creators are helming this project could have positive and negative effects on how the movie is ultimately received. On the one hand, Gough and Millar have proven that they can do something unique with these characters that people clearly connect with, and fans will be eager to see yet another take from them.

On the other hand, Wednesday could draw viewers away from the movie or vice versa, when it is a guarantee that they will invite comparison. Suffice it to say, it’s surprising that this duo is taking on another, entirely different Addams Family project when they already have one that is still going and is such a popular series.

Our Take On The New Addams Family Movie

With the ongoing discussion about how exactly Wednesday is using its source material, I wouldn’t say it’s inevitable that Gough and Millar’s new movie will be popular. Wednesday continuing alongside the movie’s release would be complicated territory for Amazon MGM and Netflix’s marketing teams; however, Wednesday wrapping up with season 3 might be in its best interest.

Meanwhile, the animated movie should definitely make great use of stylized 3D animation if it hopes to hold a candle to some of the best animated movies in recent years, while entirely rethinking how to approach The Addams Family will contribute to a fresh new story. Yet Wednesday fans may still simply be outraged that the creators are creating a rival property now.
