The DCEU’s Controversial 28% Rated Movie Is Still My Ideal DCU Superman Sequel

Although Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice wasn’t the DCEU’s most successful movie, its main team-up still seems like the perfect premise for the DCU’s first sequel to Superman. James Gunn’s Superman lays the foundations for an expansive, interconnected franchise. For instance, Supergirl and the Engineer already have movies of their own in the DCU’s slate: Supergirl and The Authority.

Little is known about a potential Superman 2. Superman‘s ending doesn’t explicitly set up a sequel, but it sets the stage for future DCU appearances by David Corenswet’s Man of Steel. Still, a Superman sequel may not be released before The Brave and the Bold and a Wonder Woman movie introduce the rest of DC’s Trinity.

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice’s Trinity Crossover Is A Salvageable Part Of The DCEU

Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman in 2016's Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice

Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was highly criticized for overstuffing and rushing its plot to set up the Justice League. Batman changes his mind about Superman too quickly, and Wonder Woman’s arrival, albeit exciting, is rather forced, narratively speaking. That said, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s Trinity team-up is an inspired idea.

The reason why Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman’s first DCEU team-up didn’t reach its full potential isn’t that they met late in Dawn of Justice. Instead, the biggest problem is that the DCEU rushed to its first crossover event without first establishing each character properly. In the DCU, Superman, The Brave and the Bold, and Wonder Woman could gradually lead to a DCU Trinity movie.

A DCU Trinity Movie Would Be An Unprecedented DC Event

Batman Superman and Wonder Woman ᴀssemble as DC's Trinity heroes

No previous DC movie has attempted to divide the spotlight evenly among DC’s three most iconic heroes. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice explored this idea halfway through the movie, but it was originally a Superman movie at heart. Batman is an antagonist for half of his screentime, and Wonder Woman only plays a significant role in the final battle.

A full-length DCU crossover movie starring Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman could refine the formula that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice toyed with. Unlike the DCEU’s rushed approach, a new team-up movie could develop the тιтular heroes’ relationships and growth as a team much further. The key lies in an even distribution of screentime and narrative focus.

A DCU Trinity movie would almost be guaranteed to top Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. James Gunn’s Superman, Andy Muschietti’s The Brave and the Bold, and the still-unтιтled Wonder Woman movie would ensure that. Much like the MCU’s Phase 1, a gradual approach to a DCU team-up movie would ensure richer interactions and more satisfying character arcs.

A Trinity Movie Might Be Essential To The DCU’s Justice League

Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman leads Ben Affleck's Batman and Henry Cavill's Superman in Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice

A DCU Trinity movie could serve as the crucial stepping stone toward an eventual Justice League film. It would prove exactly why Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are the team’s natural leaders. It could establish their strategic and moral strengths, and it would cement their status as the three heads of the superhero community.

This kind of setup might be essential given that James Gunn’s Superman introduced a DCU that’s already populated by dozens of heroes. A dedicated Trinity crossover would define Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman as Earth’s central protectors above all other metahumans. When the full Justice League finally ᴀssembles, the Trinity’s leadership would feel earned.
