Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis break down the ending of Freakier Friday. Though the story of Freaky Friday, which was originally a book, has been adapted several times, its most recent installment is Freakier Friday, which is a direct sequel to the 2003 version of Freaky Friday, upping the stakes with more characters and body switches.
Freakier Friday has been well-received thus far, garnering a 72% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans have liked it even more than that, giving the movie a 93% Popcornmeter. Freakier Friday has also made an impressive $43.8 million at the box office so far, which is a strong start for a theatrical comedy reboot.
Via Entertainment Weekly, Curtis and Lohan explained the ending to Freakier Friday. Lohan interpreted the ending as “a moment where their two worlds can exist together,” referring to Anna (Lohan) and her daughter Harper (Julia ʙuттers). Curtis expressed how moved she was by the song choice in the finale, saying it is “the reason you go to the movies.”
Freakier Friday director Nisha Ganatra also chimed in regarding Lily’s (Sophia Hammons) experience in the resolution. She thinks what ultimately “breaks it all open” is when Lily realizes that the Colemans, united with her dad (Manny Jacinto), are her true family. Check out the full quotes below:
Lindsay Lohan: I think it’s a moment where their two worlds can exist together. Her mom can still fulfill her dreams, and her daughter can still be part of those dreams, and they can have togethership, because they’re one. She comes from her mom. They can brave any storm. Whatever new is going to change their life, starting this new family, it’s possible. All they need is each other. That’s the missing piece they weren’t acknowledging the whole time.
Jamie Lee Curtis: I remember the first time I read when she says the song’s not about Jake [Chad Michael Murray], and then I heard the song. It’s very moving. It’s the reason you go to the movies — it’s the reason you go to a Disney movie. To have a moment where all of a sudden you’re going to reach over and hold the hand of the person sitting next to you, if it’s your mom, grandma, friend…. You’re going to be moved by it.
Nisha Ganatra: When Lily has the realization that this is her family, that’s what breaks it all open. It needed that moment of everybody seeing the other one for who they are, and accepting them for who they are. That’s when everything comes back together again. It felt like everyone needed that moment of seeing the other person.
What These Comments Mean For Freakier Friday
As Anna and Tess (Curtis) helpfully remind audiences in the film, they were able to undo their first body switch experience when they came to understand each other better. Vanessa Bayer’s psychic character hints that something similar will need to happen for this four-way swap to be reversed, citing a riddle that requires them to “change the hearts you know are wrong.”
The meaning of this phrase can be interpreted as the process each character has to go through to change their own heart and truly see the other person, as Ganatra’s quote says. In Freakier Friday‘s ending, Tess and Lily go through this evolution first, with Lily realizing that she should not have tried to break up her father’s marriage, and that she could be happy staying in LA with the Colemans.
With Tess and Lily convinced that things can work out, the last hearts to change are Harper and Anna’s. Harper was initially irate that her mother would make her move to London, but knowing they are staying in LA and having “togethership” with her mom helps her have a change of heart as well.
Our Take On Freakier Friday’s Ending
Curtis is right to be so moved by Freakier Friday. While it is definitely a cheesy ending, the film comes from a place of genuine emotion as it explores ideas of how to reform families, even when it might not be easy or conventional. In the process, the main characters have to go through big evolutions, and the climactic finale sees all those major changes happen.
