Daniel Day-Lewis Returns After His 8-Year Acting Retirement In First Look At New Movie

The first image has been revealed for Anemone, marking the return to the screen of Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis. The movie will explore generational conflicts, focusing on the dramatic story of a group of fathers, sons, and brothers. Anemone is also directed by Day-Lewis’ real son, Ronan Day-Lewis.

In addition to Daniel Day-Lewis, the cast includes Samantha Morton, Sean Bean, Safia Oakley-Green, Samuel Bottomley, and Adam Fogerty. The father-son Day-Lewis duo co-wrote the movie’s script together. Anemone is scheduled for release on Oct. 10, 2025.

As per Focus Features, the first image has been revealed of Anemone, showing Day-Lewis sporting a gray mustache and short gray hair, looking up to the sky. Bean stands in the background, looking at Day-Lewis. Exactly what Day-Lewis is looking at is not shown.

This pH๏τo was posted with a caption noting that the film will premiere at this year’s New York Film Festival. The caption read: Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis returns to the screen with ANEMONE, directed by Ronan Day-Lewis. Also starring Sean Bean and Samantha Morton.

What Anemone Means For Daniel Day-Lewis

The release of Anemone comes eight years after Day-Lewis announced his retirement. Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread was supposed to be the last movie he would ever make. This would have ended things on a high note for Day-Lewis, as it scored him another Best Actor Oscar nod, and the movie itself earned other nominations.

Day-Lewis is still regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time by many, and his accolades help to prove it. Noted by the Focus Features post, Day-Lewis is a three-time Oscar winner already, winning for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln.

Now, Day-Lewis’ own son has managed to bring him out of retirement for at least one more movie. So far, it seems that Day-Lewis’ existing clout as an actor is a major selling point in the marketing for Anemone. While the image release did make a brief mention of the other cast members, the fact that Day-Lewis is in the movie is its biggest draw.

Curiously, the plot details for Anemone still have not been fully revealed. Ronan Day-Lewis is a first-time feature director, so there is not much to go by in terms of what to expect from Anemone. However, Daniel Day-Lewis does not tend to disappoint, so whatever the plot may be, the film will hopefully at least feature a great leading performance.
