Ncuti Gatwa’s First New Movie Revealed After Doctor Who Exit

Ncuti Gatwa‘s next film project has officially been revealed. Gatwa is a Scottish actor who got his big break playing Eric Effiong on the well-reviewed Netflix series Sєx Education. On the film side of things, he then went on to play one of the Kens in the hit 2023 movie Barbie.

Gatwa also made history when he was cast as the first Black actor to play the lead role in Doctor Who. He made his debut in the 60th anniversary specials as well as the holiday special in 2023. Following his second season on the series, however, it was announced that Gatwa would part ways with the beloved BBC series.

As per Screen Daily, Gatwa’s first post-Doctor Who project has been announced. The actor will star in the movie The Queen of Fashion. The film is a biopic of Isabella Blow, the famous English fashion magazine editor. In addition to Gatwa, the cast includes Andrea Riseborough, Dane DeHaan, Stacy Martin, Joe Cole, Michelle Dockery, and Emily Beecham.

The Queen of Fashion is directed by Alex Marx, who also acts in the film. The film just wrapped up its shooting in the United Kingdom.

Some of the cast’s roles were announced. Riseborough will play the lead role of Blow, with DeHaan stepping in as her on-screen husband, Detmar Blow. Cole will play designer Alexander Lee McQueen, Dockery plays Alexandra Shulman, and Beecham plays Lucy Birley, Isabella’s best friend.

Other cast members include Stacy Martin, Richard E. Grant, Fionn O’Shea, Miranda Richardson, Sebastian De Souza, Tim Pritchett, Gabriel Bisset-Smith, Tuyen Do, Saffron Vadher, Vincent Perez, Francesco De Muro, August Getty, Nebras Jamali, James Alexandrou and Keni Silva.

As for Gatwa, the actor will play another fashion designer in the movie. He will portray Michael Roberts, the fashion designer at Tatler magazine. Roberts was an English designer born in 1947, who pᴀssed away in April 2023.

The Queen of Fashion will be a chance for Gatwa to take on a role very different from what he was used to with Doctor Who. Instead of a more fantastical, outlandish character, this movie will require him to play a real person, and thus take on a more grounded style.
