Gerard Butler’s New Fantasy Epic Becomes His Highest-Grossing Movie Of All Time

How to Train Your Dragon has become Gerard Butler’s highest-earning movie ever. Known for The Phantom of the Opera and various action films, including the Has Fallen franchise, Butler has been part of many commercial hits. His latest fantasy epic is a remake of 2010’s animated How to Train Your Dragon, in which he voiced Stoick the Vast.

Directed by Dean DeBlois, How to Train Your Dragon portrays an unlikely companionship between Hiccup and the Night Fury dragon Toothless. Upon release, the movie garnered praise from audiences and was an instant box office success. Along with Butler, who reprises his role, the cast includes Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Julian Dennison, and Peter Serafinowicz.

According to The Numbers, Butler has a new highest-grossing movie in How to Train Your Dragon. The film has now earned over $623.5 million globally, surpᴀssing all his previous blockbusters. Among those is the animated How to Train Your Dragon 2, which generated slightly less at $621.5 million.

This achievement is notable, especially because Butler has appeared in many high-earning movies. One of them is 300, an action epic helmed by Zack Snyder, which grossed more than $456 million. He is also part of the aforementioned Has Fallen series, and the best-performing installment, London Has Fallen, reached over $205 million globally.

Other movies, Olympus Has Fallen and Angel Has Fallen, earned around $170 million and $146 million.

Butler has the romantic comedy The Ugly Truth as well, which co-starred Katherine Heigl and collected more than $205 million. More recently, he appeared in and produced thrillers Plane and Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, two films that had respectable audience turnouts.

This latest box office is also significant because Butler starred in the original animated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, and those films are among some of his highest-grossing. The first movie generated around $494 million worldwide and the franchise quickly became a fan-favorite. The final entry, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, grossed over $539 million.
