This 2011 Box Office Flop Starring Jason Statham And Clive Owen Has Been Surging On Prime Video

A movie starring Jason Statham and Clive Owen is making a splash with at-home audiences more than a decade after flopping in theaters. Clive Owen is an Oscar-nominated actor who is best known for his roles in movies such as Closer, Inside Man, and Children of Men. Collectively, his movies have grossed nearly $2 billion worldwide.

Meanwhile, Jason Statham movies have grossed more than $8 billion worldwide. This is partially due to a number of franchises in which he is part of a star-studded ensemble, such as The Expendables and Fast and Furious. However, he has also had numerous successes as a leading man, including The Meg, Crank, and The Transporter.

Killer Elite Is Surging On Streaming

Now, 2011’s Killer Elite is thriving on streaming more than a decade after disappointing in theaters. The movie is based on the 1991 novel The Feather Men by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who is no relation to Oscar-nominated 28 Years Later and Conclave star Ralph Fiennes.

Killer Elite, which follows special ops agent Danny Bryce (Statham) ᴀssembling a team to rescue his mentor, Hunter (Robert De Niro), from a group of ᴀssᴀssins led by Spike (Owen), also stars Dominic Purcell, Ben Mendelsohn, and Yvonne Strahovski. However, it flopped in theaters, only grossing $56.4 million against a reported budget of $70 million.

On August 8, Killer Elite surged onto the daily Prime Video chart of their most-watched movies in the United States, landing at No. 8 in the Top 10. It has now held that position for three consecutive days.

It maintains a place alongside major тιтles, including the streamer’s new action-comedy Heads of State (No. 5.), Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (No. 2), The Super Mario Bros. Movie (No. 10), Uncharted (No. 4), The Accountant 2 (No. 9), and Wicked (No. 6).

What This Means For Killer Elite

In addition to being a commercial flop, Killer Elite was a critical flop. The Clive Owen movie has only earned 27% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 48% from audiences. Therefore, it would need a much longer and stronger surge on the Prime Video chart in order to make a dent in turning its flop status around.

It seems possible that Killer Elite is experiencing a surge because a number of successful recent movies starring Jason Statham have rejuvenated his career as a leading man, including The Beekeeper and A Working Man. However, it remains to be seen if it wins over audiences more than it previously had, allowing it to remain on the chart for longer.
