Box Office (Sunday Update): Weapons & Freakier Friday Topple Fantastic Four Together, But One Emerges As A Clear #1

The Fantastic Four: First Steps has been batted down from No. 1 to No. 3 by the new releases Weapons and Freakier Friday, while one of the incoming тιтles emerges as the overall leader of the weekend. Fantastic Four is the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has topped the domestic chart for two consecutive weekends.

After the MCU movie suffered a sharp 66% drop in its second weekend, it became clear that it would cede its perch at the top of the chart during its third weekend. However, for quite some time it seemed like the new Zach Cregger horror movie Weapons and the Disney legacy sequel Freakier Friday were neck and neck for No. 1.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Weapons has emerged as the clear victor of the weekend at the domestic box office with a projected 3-day debut of $42 million. Freakier Friday has fallen considerably behind with an estimated $29 million haul by the end of Sunday. Below, see the full domestic Top 5 for the weekend:

#

тιтle

3-Day Total

Cumulative (Domestic)

1

Weapons

$42 million

$42 million (weekend 1)

2

Freakier Friday

$29 million

$29 million (weekend 1)

3

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

$15.5 million

$230 million (weekend 3)

4

The Bad Guys 2

$10.4 million

$43.4 million (weekend 2)

5

The Naked Gun

$8.3 million

$33 million (weekend 2)

Meanwhile, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has taken No. 3 with a 60% drop that is better than its sophomore weekend but still relatively brutal for a superhero movie with a reported budget of more than $200 million.

It has at least managed to stay above the тιтles that premiered below it during its sophomore weekend, as the DreamWorks sequel The Bad Guys 2 fell from No. 2 to No. 4 with a 53% drop and the Liam Neeson comedy reboot The Naked Gun went from No. 3 to No. 5 with an even slimmer 50% drop.

Additionally, with two new тιтles topping the chart this weekend, two тιтles have exited completely. Just like Bad Guys and Naked Gun, they have both fallen two spots apiece. Superman fell from No. 4 to No. 6 while Jurᴀssic World Rebirth went from No. 5 to No. 7, both saying goodbye to the Top 5 amid blockbuster summer runs.

What This Means For Weapons

Zach Cregger’s Weapons has had a remarkable opening weekend in a number of ways. This includes earning Warner Bros. its seventh No. 1 debut of 2025, after Mickey 17, A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, Final Destination Bloodlines, F1 The Movie, and Superman. It’s also their unprecedented sixth debut of over $40 million in a row.

It has also nearly outgrossed the entire worldwide run of Zach Cregger’s previous horror movie, Barbarian, during its first three days at the domestic box office alone. The 2022 hit only made $45.3 million worldwide. While Weapons had a considerably higher reported budget of $38 million, it is well on its way toward turning a profit worldwide.

Barbarian’s reported budget is only roughly $4.5 million.

However, the fact that it took No. 1 over the Freakier Friday release is still one of its most extraordinary achievements. While the original 2003 Freaky Friday only opened with $22.2 million, making the sequel a marked improvement, the PG comedy had more potential than the R-rated horror movie.

In addition to Weapons‘ audience being limited by age restrictions for R-rated тιтles, it was an original project that thrived without being attached to a strong IP like Freaky Friday.

Our Take On The Weekend Box Office

Although Freakier Friday lost to Weapons during their mutual opening weekend, their triumph over The Fantastic Four: First Steps is still a good sign that mid-budget тιтles can perform well even while some tentpoles are slumping. They will likely both continue to thrive in what promises to be a quiet August with a dearth of incoming compeтιтion.
