Freakier Friday has hit a major global milestone. The Disney legacy sequel reunites Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, who starred in the 2003 body swap comedy Freaky Friday as mother and daughter Tess and Anna Coleman. The cast of the new installment also includes Julia ʙuттers, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, Vanessa Bayer, Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray.
The Freakier Friday release kicked off on August 8. While it was projected to be in a neck-and-neck race with the new Zach Cregger horror movie Weapons, it fell behind, hitting No. 2 with a projected 3-day domestic gross of $29 million. Meanwhile, the horror тιтle zoomed past it to take in $42 million at the domestic box office.
Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, as of Sunday morning, Freakier Friday is projected to end its opening weekend with a global gross of $45 million thanks to an additional $16 million coming from international markets. This makes the comedy sequel the 41st movie of the year to pᴀss the $45 million global milestone.
More importantly, this global gross exactly matches the reported $45 million production budget of Freakier Friday, meaning that the movie has taken just three days to earn its budget back in theaters.
What This Means For Freakier Friday
While 2025’s Freakier Friday has already made its budget back, it most likely still has a way to go before it’s in the black. While its exact break-even point is unknown, movies often need to earn back two and a half times their production budgets, which could place the new movie’s estimated break-even point as high as $105 million.
However, Freakier Friday is in a good position to hit that benchmark. The original 2003 movie only had a domestic debut of $22.2 million, but it eventually legged out to a global total of $160.8 million. If the sequel follows in its footsteps, it could potentially earn $210 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run.
Our Take On The Global Debut Of Freakier Friday
If it does gross more than $200 million, it could potentially make enough to earn a greenlight for a third installment featuring Curtis and Lohan. While the Freakier Friday ending doesn’t necessarily set up a sequel, the door is open for more adventures, and a haul above the original’s gross could lead to a much quicker turnaround on another sequel.
However, a sequel to Freakier Friday may seek to avoid diminishing returns by reducing its budget to something closer to the original movie’s reported $26 million. This would give the third movie room to drop while still having a solid return on investment.
