James Gunn’s Superman Box Office Flies Past Henry Cavill’s Highest-Grossing DC Movie In Studio’s Charts

James Gunn’s Superman has made more than Henry Cavill’s highest-grossing DC movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Released on July 11, the new DC movie marks the first entry in DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, starring David Corenswet as the тιтular superhero.

The movie sees Superman become entangled in international problems while trying to restore peace, which Lex Luthor exploits as an opportunity to get him out of the way. Joining Corenswet in Superman‘s cast are Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Sara Sampaio, and many more.

On its opening weekend, the film enjoyed a strong global debut of $217 million, with $122 million drawn from the domestic box office and $95 million from the international box office. Now, per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline‘s report, the movie has made more than $331 million at the domestic box office in its fifth week, which already beats Cavill’s $330 million record at Warner Bros.

What This Means For Superman

Superman has made more than $569 million worldwide so far, surpᴀssing Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, Captain America: The Brave New World, and The Fantastic Four as the highest-grossing superhero movie in 2025 at the time of writing. The movie is on track to break a 17-year streak of Marvel leading the superhero box office.

While Superman has made more than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice at the domestic box office, it still has more than $300 million away from overtaking it at the global box office. It’s currently the No.11 highest-grossing Warner Bros. movie at the domestic box office, just below Aquaman‘s $335 million earnings.

Aside from serving as director on Batman v Superman, Man of Steel, and Justice League, Zack Snyder was behind some of DC’s top-performing movies, including the 2017 Wonder Woman, which grossed $412 million domestically and $822 million globally.

Our Take On Superman’s Box Office

Since its release, Superman has seen a consistently strong performance at the domestic box office. In its fifth week, the movie has already made more than Snyder’s Batman v Superman and is on track to overtake Aquaman as Warner Bros.’s No.10 best-performing movie at the domestic box office.

On the other hand, its domestic success is in contrast to the movie’s softer international reception. Despite being a hit in North America, the movie has only made a modest $234 million, which could potentially impact its overall success.

The lower performance overseas has been addressed by Gunn, who attributed it to the “anti-American sentiment” in light of international relations and politics. Thus, the chances of overtaking Batman vs. Superman globally are unlikely. Audiences will have to wait to see how high the 2025 Superman will fly, but its current performance certainly suggests a strong start for Gunn’s DC universe.
