Another Batman movie project is being developed for the DC Universe franchise. The DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” is underway, following the release of James Gunn’s Superman movie this summer, while HBO Max is getting ready to launch Peacemaker season 2 later this month.
One of the major Justice League heroes who is getting rebooted for the DCU is Batman, with The Brave and The Bold movie currently in development for Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters.” However, The Brave and The Bold isn’t the only Gotham City-related project that fans may get to experience from DC Studios.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Weapons director Zach Cregger has penned a script for a Batman-related film set in the DCU, тιтled Henchmen. The Henchmen movie “would center on a low-level henchman in the Gotham crime world who gains notoriety after managing to incapacitate Batman through a stroke of luck.”
While Batman can potentially appear in the movie, the report reveals that Harley Quinn and Joker are part of the Henchmen script. DC Studios is said to be aware of his interest, as the pitch has not been formally made yet to James Gunn and Peter Safran.
What The Batman Spinoff Movie Report Means
While Henchmen has yet to be pitched, the timing of the report comes on the same day as a new interview with Cregger came out from THR. Even though he didn’t confirm that it was Henchmen, the Weapons filmmaker shared the following about what he has coming up:
Zach Cregger: And then I have another finished script that I want to do after that. It actually takes place in the DC Universe, but it’s a totally original and it’s not a superhero movie.
THR also noted in their Henchmen report that while the DCU hasn’t cast a new actor to play Joker, Margot Robbie could theoretically reprise the role of Harley Quinn, following her time in the DCEU movie timeline. However, time will tell how casting will work out since Henchmen needs to get greenlit by DC Studios first.
Our Take On The Batman Spinoff Movie Report
If Henchmen ends up going forward, this would be the second Batman spinoff project in the DCU timeline, as there is also the Clayface movie coming up, which is set to start production this fall. While Henchmen is definitely an unexpected idea for a DCU film, it could be one of the lower-scaled DC Studios films that also helps flesh out this world’s Gotham City.
But in the end, it will all depend on whether DC Studios wants to invest in an original story like Henchmen, as it all comes down to whether there is a clear vision and script for it. Hopefully, following the initial Henchmen report, more updates will emerge about the project in the coming months.
