Freakier Friday has an extensive soundtrack, with several songs playing throughout the long-awaited sequel. Much like the first movie, it becomes clear by the time of Freakier Friday‘s ending that the film is heavily reliant on its soundtrack. The movie includes many needle drops, linking back to the original movie while also updating the soundtrack for modern audiences.
This goes hand-in-hand with how the film balances Freaky Friday‘s returning stars and the newer faces, including Manny Jacinto, Julia ʙuттers, and Sophia Hammons. When watching Freakier Friday, this balance proves crucial to how well the film works. Freakier Friday‘s reviews reinforce this, with the sequel being almost as well-received as its predecessor.
As the body-swapping mayhem begins, the film settles into a fun, energetic groove. This groove is certainly aided by the various songs that play throughout; here is every one on the Freakier Friday soundtrack and when it plays during the movie.
When Every Song On The Freakier Friday Soundtrack Plays In The Movie
“Rebel Rebel” by Tegan and Sara – The opening song in Freakier Friday is a cover of David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel” by Tegan and Sara. Freakier Friday begins with a montage catching audiences up with the lives of Anna and Tess Coleman, with “Rebel Rebel” playing over the top of this.
“H๏τ To Go” by Chappell Roan – Shortly after the opening montage, Anna enters the room of her daughter, Harper, only to find her missing. Harper is then shown surfing with her friends before embarking on the school run. This sequence of events is accompanied by Chappell Roan’s “H๏τ To Go,” a song which featured in the trailers for Freakier Friday.
“Heart Attack” by The Asteroids Galaxy Tour – These opening songs solidify the status quo for Freakier Friday before Anna meets Eric, a charming British chef. After the meeting, another montage is shown of the next few months, fleshing out the burgeoning relationship of Anna and Eric. As this montage plays, so too does “Heart Attack” by The Asteroids Galaxy Tour.
“Oh!” by The Linda Lindas – A big subplot of Freakier Friday involves the initial mutual dislike between Harper, Anna’s daughter, and Lily, Eric’s daughter. This manifests in a huge food fight near the beginning of the movie, landing both girls in detention. As the food fight happens, “Oh!” by The Linda Lindas can be heard.
“(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes – After the body-swapping carnage of Freakier Friday begins, Harper, now in Anna’s body, has to navigate the latter’s relationship with Eric. One scene where this is the focus is a dance rehearsal for the impending wedding, during which Eric dances to Dirty Dancing‘s iconic “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.”
“Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl” by Chappell Roan – The second song by Chappell Roan that plays during Freakier Friday is “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl.” This song plays during a scene in which Lily and Harper, in Tess and Anna’s bodies, take part in an elaborate pH๏τoshoot alongside one of Anna’s clients, a musician named Ella.
“Spice Up Your Life” by Spice Girls – While Lily and Harper are having their fun pH๏τoshoot, Anna and Tess, in the younger girls’ bodies, take advantage of their newfound motivation, energy, and, most importantly, metabolism. “Spice Up Your Life” plays while Anna and Tess gorge on fast food, desserts, and sweet treats.
“OMG” by Suki Waterhouse – One subplot of Lily and Harper’s in Freakier Friday involves them trying to reignite a relationship between Anna and Jake, Anna’s love interest from 2003’s Freaky Friday. As Jake pulls up to his record store on a motorbike, “OMG” plays as the younger girls admire Anna’s old flame.
“… Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears – A callback to the first movie is found in Freakier Friday via the use of Britney Spears’ “… Baby One More Time.” In the first movie, Anna, in Tess’ body, bonds with Jake over the song, leading the latter to sing the song outside the former’s house. In the sequel, the song plays as Harper, in Anna’s body, badly attempts to flirt with Jake.
“Set You Free” by Bad at Boys – After the scene in Jake’s record shop, Harper and Lily take a joyride in his car. This scene is accompanied by the song “Set You Free” by Bad at Boys, which was created specifically for Freakier Friday.
“Baby” by Lindsay Lohan and Julia ʙuттers – Like the first movie, Freakier Friday includes a lot of original songs. Perhaps the most important one in the movie is “Baby,” which is sung in the film’s finale by Anna and Harper.
“Take Me Away” by Christina Vidal Mitchell – A movie that is also performed in the finale of Freakier Friday is “Take Me Away,” sung by Christina Vidal Mitchell. This song appears in the first movie, too, as one of the songs sung by Anna’s band, Pink Slip.
“Emotional” by Ashe – Freakier Friday closes out with “Emotional” by Ashe, appearing during the wedding between Anna and Eric. The song is a fitting one for the final act of the movie, as each of the once-disparate family members comes together for a nice, emotional wedding.
