Fantastic Four Box Office Escapes MCU’s All-Time Bottom 5 Ahead Of Projected Fall From #1 In U.S.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps has surged up an important box office chart. The superhero movie, which is the 37th feature-length installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stars Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as the Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the Thing.

2025’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps has already experienced some turbulence at the box office. After debuting with $117.6 million, Marvel’s best opening weekend of the year, it cratered with a 66% drop during its sophomore weekend that represented one of the MCU’s worst drops in history.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has taken in an additional $2 million at the domestic box office on Thursday. In addition to bringing the movie’s cumulative domestic total to $214.8 million, this pushes its global box office total to more than $385.29 million (not all international grosses for Thursday have been calculated just yet).

That number is enough for The Fantastic Four: First Steps to outgross the $382.4 million global haul of Marvel’s previous 2025 outing, Thunderbolts*. This means that it has officially escaped the Bottom 5 of the MCU, as it has already outgrossed The Marvels, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Black Widow.

What This Means For The Fantastic Four: First Steps

This surge up the all-time MCU chart has come at the right time for the Fantastic Four: First Steps box office. It is currently poised to begin its third weekend at the domestic box office, where it will be competing with the new original horror movie Weapons and the comedy legacy sequel Freakier Friday, and its prospects are looking underwhelming.

Current projections suggest that one of the new releases will take No. 1 at the domestic box office while the other will take No. 2, knocking The Fantastic Four: First Steps from its perch at the top of the domestic chart after just two consecutive weekends.

Surpᴀssing the worldwide gross of Thunderbolts* is an important step for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Even if it doesn’t climb much higher up the chart of MCU movies, it needs to outgross both of Marvel’s previous 2025 releases if it is going to have a chance of succeeding.

Both Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World ($413.6 million worldwide) underperformed compared to their reported budgets of $180 million. Because The Fantastic Four has an even higher reported budget of $200 million or more, it needs to continue climbing in order to avoid the same fate as its predecessors.

This is possible in spite of The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ impending drop to No. 3, because August is still relatively quiet as far as other compeтιтive new releases. The next majorly compeтιтive tentpole is most likely The Conjuring: Last Rites, which doesn’t premiere until September 5.
