Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s Dolores & The Franchise’s 11 Friendliest Dinosaurs

The Jurᴀssic Park franchise is most famous for its terrifying genetically-modified dinosaur villains, but Jurᴀssic World Rebirth actually continued a long-standing tradition of introducing friendly, peaceful dinosaurs as well. The fourth entry in the Jurᴀssic World series and the seventh Jurᴀssic Park movie overall, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is now available to stream at home.

The latest chapter in the seemingly never-ending Jurᴀssic franchise operated as a soft reboot, and returned the franchise to its more streamlined narrative roots, smashing box office benchmarks all along the way. In introduced the mᴀssive and villainous D-rex, along with a handful of other dangerous hybrids and mutant dinosaurs that live despite being abandoned by InGen decades earlier.

Not all the dinosaurs in Jurᴀssic World Rebirth were dangerous, however. As has been the case since the very first time a dinosaur appeared on the screen in Jurᴀssic Park, the majesty and beauty of dinosaurs is evident in some of its gentler species. Throughout the franchise, there are a number of legitimately friendly dinosaurs, or at least ones that have helped the human characters.

Dolores – Jurᴀssic World Rebirth

Dolores from Jurᴀssic World Rebirth

Aside from the special ops team led by Scarlett Johansson’s Zora Bennett, the Delgado family is inadvertently trapped on Ile Saint-Hubert in Jurᴀssic World Rebirth. The family’s youngest daughter, Isabella (Audrina Miranda) happens to pick up a curious hitchiker during their journey across the island, an aquilops that she nicknames Dolores.

A miniature-sized relative of the famous triceratops, the aquilops is small enough to be handled and herbivorous, which leads to Isabella essentially adopting the small creature after it tails them for a short while. A cynic would point to Dolores as a way to sell merchandise, while instead I’d choose to recognize her as a representation of the childlike wonder that everyone has for dinosaurs.

Blue – Jurᴀssic World Trilogy

Owen Grady and Blue in Jurᴀssic World Fallen Kingdom

Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady is introduced to the franchise as a “raptor trainer” that has been working with a pack of velociraptors since birth. The smartest of the pack he nicknames Blue, and the two develop a relationship that sees her go against her murderous instincts on many occasions during the Jurᴀssic World trilogy.

Blue actively helps save the human protagonists, including Owen, from the Indominus Rex at the end of Jurᴀssic World, proving that her relationship with Owen was more powerful than the influence of an animal she recognizes as one of her own species. It doesn’t get much friendlier than that.

Brachiosaurus – Jurᴀssic Park Franchise

Jurᴀssic Park's Brachiosaurus

The dinosaur that spawned the awe of Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) in the original Jurᴀssic Park was a brachiosaurus, the mᴀssive yet gentle sauropod. He later gets up close and personal with one while sleeping in a tree with Lex and Tim after their escape from the T. rex, and the brachiosaurus proves its gentleness and amiability by eating leaves right off a branch they’re holding.

7

Stiggy – Jurᴀssic World: Fallen Kingdom

Stiggy from Jurᴀssic World: Fallen Kingdom

The stygimoloch that Owen and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) encounter while imprisoned in the mansion in Jurᴀssic World: Fallen Kingdom isn’t quite as gentle as the brachiosaurus. It’s quite the opposite, in fact, as its modus operandi is smashing its reinforced skull into things that pose a problem.

Owen is able to get the attention of their fellow captive, nicknamed “Stiggy”, who bashes his way through the adjoining wall and then the doors that were trapping all three of them in cells. Stiggy isn’t friendly per se, but he is an ally of the human heroes in Jurᴀssic World: Fallen Kingdom and that’s friendlier than most of the other dinosaurs.

Therizinosaurus – Jurᴀssic World Dominion

Therizinosaurus in Jurᴀssic World Dominion

The therizinosaurus might be a herbivore, but its mᴀssive, razor-clawed forelimbs make it an intimidating threat to any creature, human or dinosaur. The therizinosaurus begins as an apparent antagonist in Jurᴀssic World Dominion, slowly chasing Claire through the woods and forcing her to dive underwater to escape its attention.

However, the therizinosaurus proves itself to be closer to friendly by tag-teaming with the T. rex against the movie’s primary dinosaur villain, the giganotosaurus. The T. rex bashes the giganotosaurus into the therizinosaurus, which skewers and kills the mᴀssive predator, ultimately saving the human protagonists by allowing them to escape.

Triceratops – Jurᴀssic Park

Ellie and Alan find a sick Triceratops in Jurᴀssic Park

The sick triceratops that Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) cares for in Jurᴀssic Park isn’t given a name in the movie itself, but it’s one of the most memorable creatures to come out of the franchise’s original blockbuster. While the triceratops is too sick to do much else, the large animal allows Dr. Grant to live out his childhood fantasies by giving the triceratops a mᴀssive hug while it breathes.

4

тιтanosaurs – Jurᴀssic World Rebirth

Two тιтanosauruses swinging their tails in Jurᴀssic World Rebirth

The тιтanosaurs-in-the-grᴀss scene from Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is probably the closest that any Jurᴀssic World movie has come to replicating the majesty and magic of the brachiosaurus reveal in Jurᴀssic Park. Zora Bennett and her team observe the animals’ mating rituals, and are able to collect the DNA specimens they need with relative ease, making these the friendliest dinosaurs they meet.

3

Claire – The Lost World: Jurᴀssic Park

Julianne Moore in The Lost World: Jurᴀssic Park with a dinosaur.

The baby stegosaurus that Dr. Harding (Julianne Moore) encounters on Isla Sorna in The Lost World: Jurᴀssic Park is not ever givne a name in the movie, but “Claire” was the name of the animatronic puppet used to bring it to life. It was reportedly the name that Julianne Moore used on set, and has since become the recognized way to identify the little stego.

Claire is curious about Dr. Harding, as it isn’t big enough to have developed the proper amount of fear yet, making it one of the friendliest dinosaurs the characters encounter in the movie. That nice moment with Dr. Harding is short-lived, however, as Claire promptly alerts her parents to her presence, which brings the mᴀssive and dangerous animals’ wrath down on the human characters.

2

Parasaurolophus – Jurᴀssic World Dominion

Chris Pratt as Owen catching a Parasaurolophus in Jurᴀssic World Dominion

Early in Jurᴀssic World Dominion, Owen is trying to wrangle a parasaurolophus so that he can relocate it to a safer place free from poachers and hunters. The gentle-natured herbivore is friendly with Owen once it establishes that he isn’t a threat, acting as a stand-in for a wild horse that Owen is able to calm.

1

Rexy – Jurᴀssic Park Franchise

The T-Rex roaring by the jeeps as it breaks through the fence in Jurᴀssic Park

The original T. rex from Isla Nublar is one of the franchise’s true mainstays, and over time develops into one of the series’ main protagonists, depending on how you look at it. In fact, this particular apex predator is tied with Ian Malcolm and Dr. Henry Wu for the most movie appearances in the Jurᴀssic Park franchise with four.

The Tyrannosaurus Rex known affectionately as “Rexy” obviously begins as an unintentional antagonist when she first escapes from her paddock, but she is acting out of animalistic instincts and isn’t actually being a villain. She goes on to save the series’ heroes on multiple occasions, first in the climax Jurᴀssic Park as she killed the two velociraptors chasing Alan, Ellie, Lex, and Tim.

Rexy went on to appear in each Jurᴀssic World movie, acting as the savior in Jurᴀssic World by tag-teaming with Blue against the Indominus Rex before going on to donate blood to Blue (albeit involuntarily) to save her life in Jurᴀssic World: Fallen Kingdom. She finished off the movie’s main villain, Eli Mills (Rafe Spall) before escaping Lockwood Manor.

Rexy got one final moment to shine as the hero in Jurᴀssic World Dominion, as she teamed with the therizinosaurus to take down the giganotosaurus and save the lives of the human heroes. Admittedly, Rexy would happily eat any of the human characters as a snack, and while she’s not as gentle as Dolores in Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, she’s as friendly as one could expect a T. rex to be.
