The Batman 2 Update Reveals New Filming Start Window

The Batman 2 filming has finally been confirmed as the DC sequel is on its way for 2027. The Batman universe is far from over, as director Matt Reeves is officially set to return to the franchise and continue the story of Bruce Wayne’s crusade as Gotham City’s protector in The Batman 2.

To this point, The Batman 2 story has been shrouded in secrecy, as very few details are known about Robert Pattinson’s superhero sequel. While principal pH๏τography was initially set to begin at the end of 2025, more concrete details have finally been revealed regarding when production is actually starting.

During a new earnings call with Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav, the CEO gave an update on the state of DC Studios and what is coming up both in the DCU, while also providing a huge update for The Batman 2. According to Zaslav, The Batman 2 is now set to start filming in 2026, as he shared the following:

In film, James Gunn is busy preparing the next installments of the DC super family, including ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ (2026), ‘Clayface’ (2026) and the next ‘Wonder Woman.’ In addition, ‘The Batman II’ (2027) is preparing to begin shooting next spring, among several other projects in development. The 10-year vision for the DC universe also includes an exciting array of television projects, including ‘The Penguin,’ the upcoming new season of ‘Peacemaker,’ and the debut of ‘Lanterns’ in 2026. In a precise and measured way, the DC franchise will increasingly overlay across the studio’s broader efforts: from film and TV to consumer products, games, experiences and social.

Reeves co-wrote The Batman 2 script with Mattson Tomlin, who worked on 2022’s The Batman. No new actors have been announced as part of The Batman 2 cast yet, while several cast members from the 2022 installment will be back.

With The Batman 2 filming kicking off in spring 2026, that means pre-production will be running through the rest of 2025 and a bit into next year. During this period, the long-delayed sequel will be focusing on set building, but more importantly, starting to cast the new characters who will be in the film.

Depending on how fast they find their new actors, there may be updates as early as this fall about which players from the DC canon are getting introduced in The Batman 2. As many have been wondering who the actual villain is, it will either be this year or early 2026 when the world learns who will be the main enemy.

Knowing once and for all when The Batman 2 is starting filming, it showcases once again how DC Studios’ new era for DC movies is far better than the previous regime, as no project will be rushed into production until everything is properly finalized. Whether it is DCU or Elseworlds, DC Studios remains committed to quality.

As James Gunn recently addressed The Batman 2 villain rumors, it will be fascinating to see what the story will actually focus on, especially after the little teaser at the end of The Penguin finale. With filming set for 2026, the development of The Batman 2 in the next couple of months is going to be interesting to follow.
