Avengers: Doomsday will feature several of the original X-Men actors, and one of them is finally opening up about showing up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As The Multiverse Saga is nearing its end, several heroes will be in Avengers: Doomsday, as they will unite to take on Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

Back in March, Marvel Studios dropped perhaps one of the biggest announcements of all time, as it was revealed that several X-Men actors from the Fox-Marvel era will be reprising their respective characters in Avengers: Doomsday. With the MCU timeline crossing paths with the X-Men film universe, the mutants and the Avengers will finally get to properly share the screen together.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, James Marsden finally spoke about returning as Cyclops in Avengers: Doomsday, with the film currently in production. For Marsden, who was the first actor to bring Cyclops to life in live-action, he made it very clear that he is thrilled to get the opportunity to come back, as he shared the following:

James Marsden: I’m getting a little long in the tooth to put on the superhero costume. [Laughs.] I was excited because you’re a part of something gigantic, and I’ve spent 20 years listening to people say, “when are you coming back? When are you coming back? Are you coming back?” I’m ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. Well, maybe not. I’m going to have a tough time struggling to get into costume if they waited a couple more years. So it’s been a blast. It really has. It’s been a nice little homecoming to a role that really put me on the map. It was the first real event project that I was ever a part of, and a very beloved character, this icon from the comics. And so to step back into that role was pretty special.

Marsden last reprised the role of Cyclops in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, after the timeline got reset, which erased his death from X-Men: The Last Stand. While several Avengers: Doomsday cast members were announced in March 2025, Kevin Feige has confirmed that not everyone has been revealed yet.

What James Marsden’s Cyclops Comments Mean

Given how the X-Men franchise didn’t always give Marsden’s Cyclops the best material to work with, his comments about getting to return to the Marvel role are perfectly understandable. With Cyclops being recognized as one of the most popular X-Men characters of all time, the Fox-Marvel films didn’t always do him justice.

That even includes how Marsden’s Cyclops never even got to properly suit up with his traditional costume from the comics. But with Cyclops appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel Studios could finally give Marsden’s Marvel hero everything that he never got in the original X-Men movies.

Knowing the complicated tenure Marsden had with Cyclops, it’s great to hear how excited he is to be back as Scott Summers in Avengers: Doomsday. It will also be incredible to see him reunited with so many of his old X-Men co-stars after all these years.

While the X-Men are confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, it remains to be seen if many of them will be part of the Avengers: Secret Wars cast, too. Hopefully, as Avengers: Doomsday continues filming, more details on the X-Men’s roles in the Phase 6 installment will be revealed.
