“It Definitely Got Misconstrued”: Chris Hemsworth Addresses Startling MCU Video That Hinted At Thor’s Fate In Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel Cinematic Universe star Chris Hemsworth addresses his Thor video that sparked theories about the beloved hero in Avengers: Doomsday. While Thor has been missing from the MCU timeline since the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, the Asgardian Avenger is getting ready for a mᴀssive comeback in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday.

However, while Hemsworth reprising the role of Thor is exciting, the MCU veteran worried a lot of audience members earlier this year. In May 2025, Hemsworth shared a video to celebrate his return to the franchise, but this sparked the idea that his time in the MCU as Thor was ending with Avengers: Doomsday.

The Hollywood Reporter recently caught up with Hemsworth, where they finally asked him about his highly-discussed MCU video. Hemsworth made it clear that it was definitely not the intent for fans to think that he was preemptively bidding farewell to Thor, sharing the following about the backstory behind his initial video:

(Laughs.) It was certainly not the intent. To be honest, my social media team ᴀssembled some footage and were like, “Oh, this could be cool. We’ll put some stuff up and thank the fans.” And I was like, “Yeah, cool. It’s been great.” So we penned it together, and off I went to do something else. But then I had a few people ask me about it, and someone on my team said, “Ugh, we’ve given the wrong impression here.” (Laughs.) We didn’t do any [damage control]; there was no damage control necessary. But a lot was read into a little. I was [already] off starting another chapter of this character, and this journey has been the biggest part of my career. So [the video] was a moment of graтιтude, and it wasn’t anything else. But it definitely got misconstrued and perceived in a different way.

Hemsworth is one of several actors joining the Avengers: Doomsday cast, who are currently filming the movie. Anthony and Joe Russo are back to direct Avengers: Doomsday; the directing duo will also be helming Avengers: Secret Wars.

What Chris Hemsworth’s Thor Clarification Means For Avengers: Doomsday

In Hemsworth’s defense, there was never any point to a video that flat out said that Avengers: Doomsday was going to be it for him. It’s crucial to remember that Hemsworth has been part of the MCU since his debut in 2011 with the first Thor movie; he has long been one of the pillars of this franchise.

There have been rumors that Thor’s role in Avengers: Doomsday is going to be pivotal, given his place in the MCU as a whole. Even if Thor is not announced for Avengers: Secret Wars, it is likely because Marvel Studios doesn’t want to spoil too much of what is coming up in the Phase 6 finale, but that doesn’t mean Hemsworth’s hero will die in 2026.

Our Take On Chris Hemsworth’s Thor Clarification

Thor stands out in Thor: love and thunder

After hearing Hemsworth’s clarification, chances are higher than ever that Thor will be part of the Avengers: Secret Wars cast. The bigger question, however, is if Hemsworth will still be playing Thor after The Multiverse Saga, since the MCU will be going through a reset, according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

With some of the Avengers roles being recast in the future, Thor could potentially be another character reimagined with a new star down the line. However, after Hemsworth’s newest comments, his tenure with the MCU is seemingly not ending anytime soon, as fans get ready to see him again in Avengers: Doomsday.
