Netflix’s New Korean Movie Marks 8-Year Return For Cult Director

Netflix has announced one of its next Korean movies, and it will see a major director return after several years. Ever since Squid Game drove up interest in Korean-language content back in 2021, the streamer has been leaning in to projects from the country. Earlier this year, they announced plans for 29 such projects to come out in 2025.

So far, this has taken the form of Netflix K-dramas such as Weak Hero Class 2, When Life Gives You Tangerines, and Squid Game season 3. More recently, Netflix also released the film Wall to Wall. While it got mixed reviews, the movie has become one of Netflix’s most popular non-English тιтles.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has now announced another major Korean-language project. This will be a movie called Possible Love, set to be directed by Lee Chang-dong. The story will follow “the intertwined lives of two married couples leading completely opposite lives. As their worlds collide, fractures begin to appear in their daily existence.”

The lead couple, named Mi-ok and Ha-seok, will be portrayed by Jeon Do-yeon and Sul Kyung-gu. The second couple is named Sang-woo and Ye-ji and will be played by Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong. Lee co-writes the screenplay with Oh Jung-mi.

What This Means For Possible Love

Possible Love will see the return of Lee after a seven-year hiatus. The cult director previously helmed Burning, a 2018 film that was extremely well-received upon its release. The movie won two awards at the Cannes Film Festival, and was nominated for the Palme d’Or.

Jeon is also a previous collaborator of Lee, and a celebrated actor as well. She worked with the director on Secret Sunshine back in 2007, for which she won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival. Sul also worked with the director on his earlier works, including Peppermint Candy and Oasis.

Cho, who will play Ye-ji, is also a known enтιтy in Korea. She is best known for playing the wife and mother of the wealthy Park family in the Bong Joon Ho movie Parasite. Parasite received international acclaim and went on to win Best Picture. As such, she and several of Possible Love‘s other stars will be recognizable to many audiences.

Netflix‘s production of Possible Love shows their ongoing commitment to Korean-language content. In this case, they have pulled out all the stops, nabbing a major director and a talented cast. ᴀssuming the movie is as good as some of Lee’s other works, Possible Love has the potential to be extremely popular on the streaming platform.
