David Corenswet’s Superman suit had the character’s iconic red trunks, but a new look at what the DC Universe hero could have looked like without them has been revealed. Famously, Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel never wore the trunks throughout the DCEU’s movie timeline. As such, when a new version of Superman was announced, a debate regarding the trunks ensued.
James Gunn has commented many times about how he tried out several versions of the Superman suit, both with and without the red trunks. Ultimately, it was Corenswet who convinced Gunn to add Superman’s trunks to the hero’s costume in his DCU debut. That said, the first movie in the DCU’s slate of projects came close to not featuring the trunks.
On Instagram, Maybelle Pineda, who worked on the surface design of the Superman costume, shared the first look at David Corenswet’s Superman suit without the red trunks.

The official Superman movie concept art looks pretty much like the finished version in the film, save for the fact that Corenswet’s Clark Kent is seen wearing pants without the red trunks.
What The Superman Movie Suit Concept Art Without The Red Trunks Means
The Superman movie concept art showcases the process described by Gunn, where versions of the DC hero’s suit were designed both with and without the red trunks. For those who were disappointed that Superman wore the trunks in the movie, the concept art serves as the perfect peek at what Corenswet’s Superman could have looked like with a Cavill-like approach.
Due to the DCU Superman suit’s many lines and high collar, it has been commonly compared to Superman’s suit from DC Comics’ New 52 line. Now, with the official Superman movie concept art showing Corenswet’s Superman without the red trunks, the two versions of the hero look even more alike, as New 52 Superman also had pants, not trunks.
Our Take On The Superman Movie Suit Concept Art Without The Red Trunks
While Superman’s suit was perfect for the DCU movie, with the red trunks meshing well with Gunn’s more vibrant take on the hero, it is still interesting to see what could have been. Now that Superman is out, seeing Corenswet’s suit without the trunks just feels like something is missing. They are truly an important part of Superman’s iconography.
That said, while Superman wore the red trunks for his DCU debut, that does not mean that Corenswet will always be donning the clothing item whenever he shows up as the Man of Steel. After all, superhero movie costumes are known for constantly changing, so the Superman concept art teases what a no-trunks suit could look like down the line.
