Chris Hemsworth has just recontextualized his last comments about Thor, and in doing so, I believe Loki now looks more likely to die in Avengers: Doomsday. Hemsworth’s Thor has been one of the cornerstones of the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since he debuted. While Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is catching up to him, Thor currently has the most MCU solo movies.
Throughout Thor’s MCU journey, one character has been frequently by the hero’s side, be it as a foe or friend to the God of Thunder. That is Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, aka Thor’s brother. After the original Loki was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Hiddleston returned as a variant of the character from an alternate timeline in Disney+’s Loki.
Hemsworth’s Thor and Hiddleston’s new version of Loki have yet to meet in the MCU’s movie slate. However, that should finally happen soon, as both actors were announced as part of the cast of Avengers: Doomsday. With Thor and Loki likely reuniting in the MCU movie, it is possible that a tragedy could follow them, as has happened before.
Chris Hemsworth Seemingly Teased Thor’s MCU Goodbye
Ahead of Avengers: Doomsday‘s release in 2026, Chris Hemsworth shared a surprise Thor video that led to a lot of chatter among MCU fans. тιтled, “Thank You! The Legacy of Thor,” Hemsworth’s video features key moments from Thor’s appearances in the MCU, complete with behind-the-scenes moments and sequences from Thor’s solo movies, the MCU’s Avengers franchise, and so on.
Given how the MCU’s Avengers movies will end the Multiverse Saga, with an MCU reboot set to come in 2027 with Avengers: Secret Wars, Hemsworth’s Thor video sounded a lot like a goodbye. 2019’s Avengers: Endgame killed Iron Man and Black Widow, with Captain America becoming old and retiring. As such, Thor dying in Avengers: Doomsday was a real possibility.
So far, Thor is the only original Avengers member confirmed to appear in Doomsday. All of that is added to the fact that Hemsworth previously talked about Thor’s possible death in the MCU. In a 2022 interview with Vanity Fair, the Thor actor commented on how his possible return as the character in the future would “probably be the finale.”
The Thor Actor Has Now Made His MCU Future Seem Bright
Now that he has been working on Avengers: Doomsday for a few months, the MCU Thor actor has cleared up that whole situation with the video. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Hemsworth addressed Thor’s possible dark Avengers: Doomsday fate. According to Hemsworth, it was not his goal for the video to make it seem like he was saying goodbye to Thor.
Instead, the actor wanted to express his graтιтude towards a role that has been a major part of his career. As the actor noted, he was already off to starting a new chapter as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday when he shared the video. So, in Hemsworth’s eyes, the footage and caption were not meant to tease a finale for Thor.
I find Hemsworth’s comments to be thrilling. While I could understand killing a major character like Thor in Avengers: Doomsday, the hero still has some storylines left to follow through before he can be done with the franchise. Adding to that, Thor should be part of Avengers: Secret Wars, which could honor Marvel’s entire live-action legacy through the multiverse.
Why Thor Staying In The MCU After Avengers: Doomsday Makes Sense
Hemsworth’s new Thor comments fall in line with what happened to the character the last time he was seen onscreen. While Thor: Love and Thunder had tonal issues that hindered its potential, the MCU movie did set up a few interesting paths for Marvel to explore with Thor in future releases. Chief among them is a possible MCU Thor 5.
While no official word has come about another Thor movie, Hemsworth wants to return for Thor 5. If that were to happen, Marvel Studios already has the perfect idea about how to start the project. One of Thor: Love and Thunder‘s post-credits scenes introduced Hercules, played by Ted Lᴀsso‘s Brett Goldstein, to the MCU.
Hercules was sent by his father, Zeus, after Thor for stealing his Thunderbolt and making him look like a fool. The two have yet to meet and fight in the MCU, and with all that is happening in Avengers: Doomsday, adding Hercules to the mix would prove too much. Besides, Thor and Love’s bond still has to be developed.
I’m Convinced Loki Will Die In Avengers: Doomsday If Thor Won’t
With Chris Hemsworth’s new Thor comments about how he is not saying goodbye to the character, but starting a new journey, Loki’s death becomes more like for Avengers: Doomsday. Every MCU Avengers movie has had at least one major death, with characters like Agent Coulson, Quicksilver, Gamora, Iron Man, and Black Widow dying in previous films.
Given how Thor and Loki are two of the most powerful MCU veterans in Avengers: Doomsday, their deaths would be shocking, and they would help set up Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom as a major threat. With Thor now likely to survive, Loki, who is the protector of the multiverse and thus stands in Doom’s path, seems more likely to die.
