Dave Franco opens up on whether he would want to play Luigi Mangione in a potential biopic film. One of the biggest cases to hit 2024 was the killing of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson on Dec. 4, as the 50-year-old was sH๏τ in broad daylight, with this becoming one of the final widespread stories of last year.
This led to the arrest of then-26-year-old Luigi Mangione, who has become a polarizing figure online, with many calling him a hero in the political landscape, in light of the subject of U.S. healthcare claims. Due to his resemblance, it didn’t take long for the Internet to nominate Dave Franco to play the alleged killer in a future biopic project.
During his appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, a fan asked Franco if he would want to play Luigi Mangione in a biopic if he was offered the chance. Franco made it clear that, as of right now, he hasn’t been contacted about playing Mangione, but that doesn’t mean he would be against it. Check out Franco’s comments below:
Oh, how do I answer this… no one has approached me about it yet, I’ll say that. More people in my life reached out about this exact thing than anything else that has ever happened […] So let’s just say I’m open if it’s the right people, and let’s leave it at that.
Since his arrest, several documentaries on Mangione have been produced. He also became the subject of a satirical musical produced in San Francisco, тιтled Luigi: The Musical, which starred Jonny Stein as the тιтular character. Luigi Mangione has been indicted on four federal charges and eleven state charges, which include first-degree murder.
What Dave Franco’s Luigi Mangione Comments Mean
It’s not surprising that Franco is being very careful about his response, as the Mangione case is still ongoing, with the 27-year-old suspect currently locked up at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, but hasn’t been sentenced. At this point, a biopic on this case wouldn’t be possible to go forward with, as its outcome has yet to be determined.
With that in mind, whenever the outcome of the trial is revealed, it wouldn’t be shocking if a Luigi Mangione biopic gets quickly greenlit, as Hollywood tends to be very reactionary with criminal cases. Whether or not Franco would be the one to play him remains to be seen, but Hollywood producers are more than likely aware of the actor being fan-cast for the role.
Our Take On Dave Franco’s Luigi Mangione Comments
While Franco is clearly not against the idea, his comments make it clear that it would all depend on how a Luigi Mangione biopic would be handled, as this is a sensitive subject that has people divided on the alleged killer’s actions. However, the media is already being inspired by the Luigi Mangione case, including an episode of Law & Order season 24.
If Dave Franco ends up getting to play Luigi Mangione one day, it would be fascinating to see how he would approach that role. But for now, the world will have to wait and see if any Hollywood names ever get attached to this potential biopic once the case is over.
