The Resurrection of the Christ has a release date, and it’s been revealed that the upcoming film will be split into two parts. Mel Gibson’s The Pᴀssion of the Christ sequel has been in development for years following the success of the original movie, which was released in 2004.

As shared by Lionsgate, Resurrection of the Christ will be released in two installments, with the first coming on March 26, 2027, followed by the second on May 6, 2027. Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in The Pᴀssion of the Christ, will reprise his role.

As seen below, the films will be released on important dates in the Christian calendar. The first hits theaters on Good Friday, which celebrates the day Jesus was crucified. The second film will be released on Ascension Day, celebrating the day Jesus allegedly ascended into Heaven forty days after his resurrection.

What This Means For The Resurrection Of The Christ

The Resurrection of the Christ‘s split into two films confirms at least part of what Mel Gibson told ScreenRant earlier in the year. Gibson stated the movie would be turned into two because of the mᴀssive scope of its story. He called the Resurrection an “almost impossible to understand subject” and implied much need for backstory.

The split, and the fact that both halves of the story will be released with a minimal gap between them, also suggests that the entire story will be sH๏τ at once and, for that reason, audiences may be left hanging at the end of the first film.

Our Take On The Resurrection Of The Christ Release Date

In March, ᴅᴇᴀᴅline reported that The Resurrection of the Christ was going to begin filming in August 2025. This could imply that, on top of a long physical production process, the movie could be special effects-heavy. If that’s the case, The Resurrection of the Christ could be epic on a scale that far overshadows Gibson’s last Jesus film.

Gibson revealed at Fan Expo that, for audiences to understand Jesus’ Resurrection, “you have to start with the fall of the angels in the firmament”, which, in secular terms, is essentially the origin story of Satan. The Resurrection of the Christ, then, might just utilize Christian mythology in the biggest way seen on screen to date.
