Namor & Sue Storm’s Controversial Relationship In Avengers: Doomsday Just Got Way More Likely

Warning! This article contains spoilers for The Fantastic Four: First Steps.Avengers: Doomsday will include several characters from all over the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and after a new tease, I’m convinced that Marvel might be headed towards one of its most infamous romances. The MCU’s Avengers franchise is facing its biggest release gap yet, with Avengers: Doomsday arriving more than 7 years after the last entry in the franchise, Avengers: Endgame.

That is one of the elements that I believe has negatively impacted the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. Without an Avengers movie, the franchise has felt aimless. Thankfully, that will soon change, with Avengers: Doomsday‘s mysterious story set to unite characters from different corners of the MCU. With many players coming together for the first time, sparks could fly.

After all, the MCU’s Avengers movies are no strangers to romance. While it was not the most beloved plotline, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow were together for a film, with more hero relationships touched on by other Avengers movies. Now, the MCU could explore a love triangle in Marvel’s next Avengers movie, and it would be surprising.

Avengers: Doomsday Will Put Namor And Sue Storm In The Same Movie

Marvel Studios has finally folded the Fantastic Four into the MCU, with the franchise’s version of the popular team debuting in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. While the MCU Fantastic Four movie’s box office performance is not as great as Marvel might have hoped, the film is solid and does a great job of bringing faithful versions of these characters to life.

As such, I’m thrilled that the Fantastic Four will return in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. That was revealed even before the team debuted in their movie, with the cast of Avengers: Doomsday announced during a surprise live-stream by Marvel Studios. One of the most commented additions to the cast was that of Namor, returning after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Namor and Sue Storm have been romantically linked in the comics, which does not sit well with fans of her relationship with Reed Richards. Now, the MCU will put Namor and Sue together in a live-action movie for the first time in Avengers: Doomsday. With Kevin Feige confirming that MCU characters go to the Baxter Building, Namor might even enter her home.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Cast Has Teased Sue Storm & Namor’s Complicated Relationship

Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm lost in thought in The Fantastic Four: First Steps

The reveal that Namor and Sue Storm will be in Avengers: Doomsday was enough for romance theories to emerge. However, it seems that not all of those come from outside the house, as one MCU star is keeping her eye on the Black Panther franchise villain. During an interview with CinemaBlend, The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ cast addressed the Namor rumors.

After the actors were asked about Namor, Reed Richards star Pedro Pascal revealed that Vanessa Kirby, who plays Sue Storm, talks about him “every single chance she gets.” The actress then chimed in, saying, “It does come up a lot.” Pascal then responded with “no comment” about a possible Namor, Sue, and Reed love triangle in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday.

While I don’t think the cast would reveal either way regarding a love triangle in Avengers: Doomsday, I find the comments about how Kirby always brings up Namor and how the cast is very much aware of that controversial relationship intriguing. That could have come up in research for the roles. However, Doomsday‘s script could also be the source.

I Don’t Think The Namor And Sue Storm Relationship Would Make Sense For The MCU After The Team’s Debut

While it might have worked out — debatably — in the comics, I don’t think that a Namor and Sue Storm romance would make sense for the MCU. Sure, Namor could find Sue attractive, and there might be some tension, but the franchise has already established a solid foundation when it comes to Sue and Reed’s marriage in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

More than superhero action, the focus of the MCU Fantastic Four movie was on the dynamics between its characters. I found the idea of starting the movie with a scene where Reed and Sue are alone, talking about their lives, and she is reᴀssuring him, perfect to showcase their love and dynamic. Throughout the film, that would be tested in a way.

At one point, Sue directly tells Reed that his acting like he does hurts her. However, at the end of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, it is clear that these two characters are made for each other. They have a deep understanding of how the other works and lift one another. After saving their son, I don’t see them breaking up.

How The MCU’s Avengers Movies Could Set Up Another Possible Love Interest For Sue Storm

Doctor Doom rips Reed Richards' face in two in Marvel Comics

While Namor is a possible problem for Reed and Sue’s marriage, Avengers: Doomsday will feature another character who has also been romantically linked with Sue before. Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom debuted in The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ post-credits scene. In that scene, he interacted with Franklin Richards. Sue then arrived, setting up their meeting in Avengers: Doomsday.

In the 2015 Secret Wars event from Marvel Comics, when Doctor Doom rewrote reality to rule over Battleworld, he made Sue Storm his wife. With Downey’s Victor von Doom now in the MCU and that event being adapted into the MCU, Doctor Doom could make the twisted romance a reality in Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars.
