While they did not release exactly the same weekend, this summer has seen a major superhero movie battle between Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The former hit movie theaters on July 11 and opened to an impressive $125 million. To date, Superman has grossed $551.3 million worldwide.
Then came the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps two weeks later on July 25. That Marvel movie nearly matched Superman‘s opening, making $117.6 million. Now, it has amᴀssed $367.4 million worldwide, but its total is still growing. Both films also received strong reviews from both critics and audiences.
The prominence of these movies in theaters has led to increased interest in similar тιтles at home. Many people have been watching previous Fantastic Four movies, for example, preceding the MCU’s reboot. The Incredibles, a Pixar film often compared to Fantastic Four, is also trending on Disney+. Now, a movie more comparable to Superman is doing well on streaming.
Megamind Is Trending On Streaming
Megamind, as of late, has been gaining traction on streaming. Unlike The Incredibles, which is similar to Fantastic Four on a broader level, Megamind is a more direct spoof of Superman. Like Clark Kent, its blue alien protagonist is sent to Earth from another planet by his parents. Except in his case, Megamind becomes an evil genius.
Megamind has a superstar voice cast, including Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, David Cross, and Ben Stiller. The movie garnered decent reviews, with a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes. Megamind also made $321.8 million on an estimated $130 million budget.
15 years after its debut in 2010, Megamind is currently seeing success on streaming. The DreamWorks project is the No. 10 movie on Netflix in the United States today (Aug. 5). It’s also the No. 7 film among kids’ movies.
Our Take On Megamind’s Streaming Status
Megamind had the unfortunate release curse of debuting the same year as Despicable Me. With both films starring “bad guys” as their protagonists, they had similar premises, but Megamind was completely eclipsed by Gru and the Minions. This lessened its impact when it came out in theaters, and the movie was largely forgotten over time.
Nonetheless, I am glad that the release of Superman seems to be cuing some people to watch Megamind. While it is not on the same level as Shrek or How to Train Your Dragon, Megamind is one of DreamWorks’ better films. As such, this Superman-infused era is a better time than ever to finally check out the film after over a decade.
