Sequel To Gerard Butler’s 77% RT Hit Disaster Movie Finally Sets Release Date

Greenland: Migration now has a release date. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, the 2020 post-apocalyptic movie Greenland stars Gerard Butler as John Garrity, a man who embarks on a dangerous quest to save his family from catastrophe.

While initially scheduled for theatrical release, the movie went straight to premium video on demand and then streaming on HBO Max due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A sequel was confirmed after Greenland‘s success. While it was originally scheduled to arrive this year, the release has been postponed.

According to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, the upcoming sequel to Greenland will be released on Jan. 9, 2026. Picking up after the events in the first movie, with the Garrity family surviving the comet, Greenland: Migration sees them being forced to leave their bunker to travel across Europe in search of a new home. Butler is joined by Amber Rose Revah, Sophie Thompson, Trond Fausa Aurvag, and William Abadie.

What This Means For Greenland: Migration

Migration has been delayed for years since its confirmation, as the long-awaited sequel to the 2020 movie didn’t start filming until last year. While filming wrapped in July 2024, it has now been removed from the 2025 release board. However, after being long delayed, fans of Greenland will be able to watch the sequel in theaters in roughly five months.

In addition to the return of the major cast, Waugh has returned to helm the picture, written by Mitchell LaFortune and Chris Sparling. Filming for Greeland: Migration having wrapped means that it is currently in post-production. The new release date announcement marks the latest solid news about the movie.

Our Take On Greenland: Migration’s January 2026 Release

Gerard Butler runs in Greenland

Greenland: Migration will join Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Return to Silent Hill, and an unтιтled Disney movie as part of the January 2026 slate. This puts two post-apocalypse films in one month, which is potentially something very exciting to look forward to for genre fans.

Waugh previously teased a Dune-like approach to Greeland 2, which explores the aftermath of Part 1 and how living in a bunker underground for a long time affects the human brain. Meanwhile, The Bone Temple, scheduled to arrive only three days ahead of Butler’s movie, tunes into the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse 28 years after the outbreak and sees how an innocent boy became a cult leader.

Both movies promise unconventional approaches to the genre. While it’s unclear whether the new schedule had anything to do with The Bone Temple‘s release date, Greenland: Migration‘s postponement makes January 2026 a big month for post-apocalypse fans.
