Another Iconic Lindsay Lohan Classic Surges On Streaming Alongside Freaky Friday

The premise of Freaky Friday has now been entertaining fans for generations. The story originated with the 1976 Disney picture starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris as the body-swapped mother-daughter duo. The movie was then remade several times, the most famous of which came out in 2003.

This was the Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan version of Freaky Friday, which became a modern classic and serves as the jumping off point for this year’s legacy sequel film Freakier Friday. The new movie chronicles the characters’ lives two decades later, upping the body swap stakes when Lohan’s daughter and stepdaughter-to-be are also involved.

While Lohan has made a comeback in recent years, her Freaky Friday era was the most important time of her career. The remake came out shortly before Mean Girls, a movie that would also define Lohan’s filmography. However, in advance of this week’s release of Freakier Friday, another early Lohan film is doing well on streaming.

The Parent Trap has recently become a hit on streaming. Beyond the Lohan connection, The Parent Trap has something else in common with Freaky Friday. The 1998 movie is also a remake of a classic that was released decades after the original, which in this case, was the 1961 movie of the same name.

Lohan’s version was directed by Nancy Meyers. In addition to Lohan, 1998’s The Parent Trap features a leading cast including Dennis Quaid, Natasha Richardson, Elaine Hendrix, Lisa Ann Walter, and Simon Kunz.

Now, The Parent Trap is popular on streaming ahead of its star’s next big movie hitting theaters. According to Disney+, The Parent Trap is in the Top 10 in the United States today (Aug. 5). Meanwhile, the 2003 version of Freaky Friday is also seeing a resurgence.

What The Parent Trap’s Streaming Status Means For Lindsay Lohan

This is another excellent sign for Freakier Friday. It indicates that the Freaky Friday fans are not only tuning in to watch the previous movie on streaming, but Lohan fans are also going back to appreciate her past work. This will be an additional audience drawn to the new film.

Freakier Friday is coming to theaters this week, and it is looking more and more like it will end up being a big box office hit. Streaming successes do not always translate directly into theatrical success, but Freaky Friday and now The Parent Trap have been trending for enough of a sustained time that the outlook is positive.
