DC Universe star John Cena finally opened up about his big Peacemaker cameo in the Superman movie. While waiting for his DCU TV show to return, one of the Superman movie references and cameos that fans were treated to was Christopher Smith, a.k.a. Peacemaker, in Cena’s first DC appearance since Peacemaker season 1.
Even though Peacemaker never shares the screen with David Corenswet’s Superman, Cena’s character gets the chance to take a sH๏τ at the Man of Steel during his appearance on Cleavis Thornwaite’s The Sphere News talk show. However, what fans may not know is how the Superman cameo came about for Cena, but the star has finally revealed the BTS story.
The official Peacemaker X account shared Cena’s cameo, as well as the actor breaking down how the Superman role happened for him. According to Cena, it was actually a very last-minute call to have Peacemaker show up in Superman, as he recounted the following about how James Gunn made it a reality:
I was called in at the final hour as we were preparing for Peacemaker season 2. I did the costume fittings for the new Peacemaker season 2 wardrobe. They were filming Superman at the time, and James [Gunn] asked me if I wanted to be involved, and my answer was, “Heck yes!” So I got to go on a talk show and talk some smack about Superman. Well, I think everything from the branding to the idea of a true virtuous superhero, you have to start the story of good and evil somewhere, and I think Superman is building block one of that.
Peacemaker season 2, which will premiere on Thursday, Aug. 21, on HBO Max, is confirmed to be taking place one month after the Superman movie’s ending. Superman characters Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Maxwell Lord, and Rick Flag Sr. will feature in Peacemaker season 2.
What John Cena’s Comments Mean For Superman
It’s not a shock that they went ahead with Peacemaker’s Superman cameo at the last minute, as this is a simple, but fun moment to feature the character, without any major changes having to be made to the overall story. If anything, it’s actually brilliant marketing for Peacemaker season 2, since that will be the next DCU release for DC Studios.
From a story perspective, a character like Peacemaker would be one of the first public figures to blast the Man of Steel, after Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) exposes Jor-El (Bradley Cooper) and Lara’s (Angela Sarafyan) message to Superman. However, it’s now likely that Christopher’s remarks about Superman will be referenced in Peacemaker season 2, to some degree.
Our Take On John Cena’s Superman Cameo Comments
Especially after hearing Cena’s Superman cameo story, it’s great to see how quickly he is being integrated into the DCU. If anything, it is appropriate to see the DCU projects being tied together in this way. Next, Peacemaker season 2 will establish how his show fits into the franchise, after initially being set up in the DCEU movie timeline.
Since there are other Superman connections for Peacemaker season 2, it will be fascinating to see if the HBO Max show is where Corenswet’s hero will finally meet Cena’s character, as Krypton’s last son could easily be another surprise cameo. Time will tell how big the connectivity will be between Superman and Peacemaker season 2.
