Sony is developing another major Spider-Man movie. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting ready for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Sony is also working on the highly anticipated conclusion to the Spider-Verse trilogy with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is slated to release on June 25, 2027.
While Sony is wrapping up Miles Morales’ animated saga, one of the major upsides of the Spider-Verse movies is the many variants of Spider-Man that they explore throughout. While the Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse movie is currently still in production, a familiar Spider-variant may soon be headlining his own film.
According to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, a Spider-Punk animated movie is in development, with Daniel Kaluuya and Ajon Singh writing the script for the Spider-Verse spinoff film. Kaluuya is expected to reprise his role of Hobie Brown in the Spider-Punk film; the actor will also be back to voice him in Beyond the Spider-Verse.
At the time of writing, there is no director attached to the Spider-Punk movie, as there is also no confirmed release date for the project or any known story details beyond Hobie Brown being the protagonist. The Spider-Punk movie is, according to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, in “early development.”
What The Spider-Punk Movie Means For The Spider-Verse
While time will tell what the Spider-Punk spinoff will focus on for the тιтular hero, it wouldn’t be shocking if Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse somehow plants the seeds for Kaluuya’s film. With the Spider-Verse concept at their disposal, the writers can wrap up Shameik Moore’s Miles’ arc before having the Spider-Punk movie focus on Hobie’s universe.
Given how Spider-Punk was one of the breakout characters from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it’s also not surprising that Sony is looking at having Hobie lead his own movie. Spider-Punk isn’t the only Spider-Verse-related film Sony has in the works, as a Spider-Woman animated movie has also been in development for a few years.
Our Take On The Spider-Punk Movie
With the great potential that exists for the Spider-Punk character, having him get his own movie is another terrific way to keep the Spider-Verse franchise going when Miles’ time is finished. It also leaves the door open for other Spider-Verse movie characters to come back alongside new variants from the source material.
The bigger question now, however, is whether Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will actually lay any groundwork for the Spider-Punk film in any capacity. Given that the Spider-Punk movie is only in early development, it might be a while until more updates are shared about Kaluuya’s animated installment.
