Alison Brie is following up Together with her directorial debut, described as a “female-forward” horror film. Brie stars in the new body horror movie alongside her real-life husband, Dave Franco, as a couple who relocate to the countryside and encounter a strange supernatural force that begins to alter their bodies in terrifying ways.
Together was written and directed by Michael Shanks in his feature debut, and in addition to Franco and Brie, the cast also includes Damon Herriman, Mia Morrissey, Jack Kenny, Sunny S. Walia, Karl Richmond, Tom Considine, Melanie Beddie, and Sarah Lang.
Now, following Together, the actress is getting ready to move behind the camera for her upcoming project. During an interview with Marie Claire, Alison Brie announced that she will make her feature directorial debut with a horror film that she co-wrote alongside Alice Stanley Jr., which she describes as “female-forward” with “very fun energy.”
Brie continues, saying that she envisioned directing the film while writing it. She highlights how women often struggle with self-doubt and perfectionism, but emphasizes the importance of trusting oneself. Ultimately, she chose to take the leap into directing, believing in her readiness and creative vision for the project. Read her full comments below:
While we were writing it, I felt like I was writing it to direct it. I could see every sH๏τ in my head… I think women carry a lot of self-doubt and we have a desire to make everything perfect before we attempt something, or we learn everything we can learn. You want to really check the boxes and go, am I prepared for this? And at a certain point you have to just take the leap and believe in yourself.
What This Means For Alison Brie’s Directorial Debut
Now is the perfect time for Alison Brie to make her directorial debut with a horror film, as she is fresh off starring in Together. The new body horror movie, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in January but was just released in theaters on July 31, has received rave reviews from critics, resulting in a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Though Brie previously directed a 2019 episode of her Netflix series GLOW, her upcoming horror film will mark her feature directorial debut. It seems to project very similarly to Together, likely an independent horror film that could premiere at festivals and garner attention through word-of-mouth. So far, Together has yet to translate its buzz into box office numbers, making just $10.9 million against its $17 million budget.
Our Take On Alison Brie’s Directorial Debut
With her directorial debut making the latest development, Alison Brie’s career is taking an interesting trajectory. She started her career as a cast member on Mad Men, but had her breakthrough starring in the sitcom Community. Now, Together is one of Alison Brie’s best movies yet, and she’s continuing down the horror path by making her directorial debut.
She’s already shown she’s a capable writer, having co-written the films Horse Girl (2020), Spin Me Round (2022), and Somebody I Used to Know (2023), but how Alison Brie fares as a female horror director remains to be seen.
