Anne Hathaway’s $483M Comedy Movie Is Resurrected On Streaming 14 Years Later

A family comedy starring Anne Hathaway has been resurrected on streaming 14 years later. Known for portraying Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries and for rom-coms, notably The Devil Wears Prada and Bride Wars, Hathaway has been featured in many cherished and commercially successful movies throughout her career.

Hathaway has appeared in several comedy films, starring opposite Steve Carell and Robert De Niro in Get Smart and The Intern, respectively. She also joined the ensemble cast of Ocean’s 8 and played the White Queen in Disney’s live-action Alice in Wonderland movies, the first of which generated over $1 billion.

Selina Kyle from The Dark Knight Rises and Fantine from Les Misérables, which earned Hathaway an Academy Award, are among her most acclaimed roles. The action film and musical adaptation went on to become blockbusters, and Hathaway has continued collaborating with Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight trilogy) on Interstellar and the highly anticipated The Odyssey.

Rio Is Gaining Impressive Viewership On Streaming

Jewel (Anne Hathaway) and Rafael (George Lopez) in Rio

Another commercial hit for Hathaway was Rio, a 2011 animated comedy that earned $483 million globally. The movie, directed by Carlos Saldanha of the Ice Age franchise, follows Blu and Jewel, two macaws exploring Rio de Janeiro. Along with Hathaway, the voice cast of Rio includes Jesse Eisenberg, Leslie Mann, Jemaine Clement, Jane Lynch, George Lopez, and Jamie Foxx.

Rio is now gaining viewership on Disney+ and ranks number five on the streaming service’s Top 10 in the U.S. Today’s list, right behind the Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis Freaky Friday film.

Also, ahead of Rio on the list are Freakier Friday: A Special Look, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+, and Eyes of Wakanda. Other тιтles include Captain America: Brave New World, Snow White, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four, and The Parent Trap.

What This Means For Rio

The streaming success of Rio may be unsurprising to some, considering how well the Anne Hathaway movie performed in 2011. The film was largely praised by audiences for its animation style and musical numbers, including the Oscar-nominated “Real in Rio.” A sequel, simply named Rio 2, was released three years later and became another box office hit.

Because Rio 2 is also on Disney+, it will be interesting to see whether that movie begins charting in the days ahead. The increasing viewership of Rio may stem from how popular the comedy once was or audiences enjoying the summer, and could be a positive sign for any potential sequels down the line.
