Taron Egerton’s new mystery thriller is here, and it now has a Rotten Tomatoes score. Egerton will be best known to many audiences for his role as Eggsy in the Kingsman franchise, a role he first played back in 2014.

Egerton returned as the spy character in 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and he is expected to return for one more outing with Kingsman 3 from franchise director Matthew Vaughn. Outside his work in this action spy franchise, however, Egerton has established himself as a bankable star.

The Welsh actor took on the role of Elton John in Rocketman (2019), which was a big critical and commercial success. He also stars in Carry-On (2024), an action thriller that now stands as the second most-watched English-language Netflix movie ever.

2025 has been another strong year for Egerton, with the actor leading the Apple TV+ series Smoke. His latest release is a smaller film in the thriller genre, but one that sees him taking on a new kind of role.

The Taron Egerton Film Is Pleasing Critics

She Rides SH๏τgun has debuted on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a respectable score from critics. Directed by Nick Rowland and based on the Nick Harper novel of the same name, the thriller features Egerton starring as Nate, an ex-con who reunites with his estranged daughter after she is marked for death.

On Rotten Tomatoes, She Rides SH๏τgun has now debuted with a 78% critics’ score from 40 reviews. Though this score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, it currently has a “fresh” designation. No Popcornmeter score is available just yet, but one should emerge as more people get a chance to watch the movie, which had a limited theatrical release on August 1.

Egerton Continues To Excel

A limited theatrical release means fewer people will get a chance to watch She Rides SH๏τgun in theaters, but the Rotten Tomatoes score could encourage some to seek the film out. If the movie fares well with audiences too, it could benefit from positive word-of-mouth, including when it eventually releases on VOD and streaming.

Generally, critics praise Egerton’s latest venture for its strong emotional storytelling and gritty presentation. In her She Rides SH๏τgun review for ScreenRant, Rachel Labonte gives the film a score of seven out of 10, citing the performances from Egerton and Ana Sophia Heger as highlights. She writes:

In a role that is very removed from his star-making parts in the Kingsman movies and Rocketman, Egerton cements himself as one of the most underrated actors of his generation. Nate is a difficult character to play; he must elicit genuine fear while also, somehow, convincing us that he can be trusted with his own child.

It’s a brilliant, gut-wrenching performance. It’s made all the better by Egerton’s chemistry with Heger. The young actor is a revelation, effortlessly flitting between Polly’s wide-eyed sweetness and her darker side, which is growing at a concerning rate throughout the film.

Reviews for Smoke may have been somewhat lukewarm, but Egerton is undoubtedly on a H๏τ streak at the moment, regularly starring in movies and TV shows across a variety of genres. Though She Rides SH๏τgun may not become a mᴀssive hit, it’s further proof that Egerton will continue to grow effortlessly beyond the Kingsman franchise.
