Tom Holland hints at taking a break from acting as he prepares for his busy 2026 movie schedule. One of the most popular stars of his generation, the English actor made his film debut in the disaster drama The Impossible (2012), turning in a powerful performance as a teenage tourist trapped in a tsunami, which garnered critical acclaim.

However, Holland ascended to superstardom when he became synonymous with Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having played the part in six films so far, starting with Captain America: Civil War (2016). He went on to headline Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), with sequels Far From Home (2019) and No Way Home (2021) each making more than $1 billion at the box office.

Now, in a recent profile by GQ, Holland hinted that he may take a break from acting after his busy 2026 schedule. The actor feels blessed that he’s able to take breaks, reset, and avoid burnout. He believes “it’s important to set boundaries” and “to be mindful about overworking.” After a busy upcoming year, he plans to take more time off in 2027. Read his full comments below:

I feel really blessed to be at a point in my career where I can take time off, reset, and come back ready to go. You can’t be in every movie, and you can’t do your best work when you’re burnt out. What I’ve learnt is that it’s important to set boundaries – to be mindful about overworking. I’ve got a slightly busy year next year, and then I’ll probably take a bit more time off in 2027. We’ll see.

This Will Be His Second Recent Break From Acting

If Tom Holland goes through with his plans, this will be his second break from acting in recent years. He previously took a year-long break from acting due to the demanding nature of his Apple TV+ miniseries The Crowded Room in 2023, which required him to explore intense emotions that took a significant toll on his mental health, and he needed time to recover and prioritize his well-being.

Holland plans to take a second break from acting after his busy 2026 schedule. This year, he has already filmed Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, an ambitious adaptation sH๏τ across the world. Holland reportedly finished filming his scenes in Italy, describing the experience as “the job of a lifetime” and “the best experience [he’s] had on a film set.”

Today, on August 1, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has started filming, which should occupy the rest of Holland’s 2025. He will be busy promoting these two blockbusters for much of next year, with The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day both releasing in July 2026, two weeks apart from each other.

It’s Understandable After The Odyssey

It’s understandable that Tom Holland would want to take a break from acting after The Odyssey. While shooting a Christopher Nolan movie can be the job of a lifetime and a rewarding experience, as Holland describes it, it can also be incredibly demanding, as Nolan shoots very quickly and sets a high standard of excellence for his actors.

After embarking on an odyssey, the natural thing to do is to rest.

Shooting a Spider-Man movie immediately after The Odyssey, and all the pressure and expectations that come with that, surely won’t be easy for Tom Holland. Filming two tentpoles in one year, along with the global press tours that follow, is no small feat. After embarking on an odyssey, the natural thing to do is to rest.

The Odyssey releases on July 17, 2026, followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, 2026.
