I Can’t Believe A Follow-Up To The MCU’s $1.3 Billion Success Isn’t A Priority For Marvel

Marvel Studios doesn’t seem to be prioritizing any follow-up to ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine despite it being a mᴀssive MCU box office success. Fox’s ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool movies are the result of arduous campaigning, which convinced the studio to make a faithful adaptation of the Merc With A Mouth. Since 2016, Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson has been box office gold.

ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine took ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool’s success to new heights in the MCU. Thanks in part to the return of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and several other fan-favorite Marvel character portrayals, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine reached $1.338 billion worldwide. After ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s ending, Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman’s Logan apparently faced a promising MCU future.

Marvel Doesn’t Seem To Be Developing A ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine Sequel Anytime Soon

Ryan Reynolds As ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool And Hugh Jackman As Wolverine Standing In The TVA In ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine

According to a Variety report, Marvel isn’t in any rush to develop a direct sequel to ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine. Instead, all focus seems to be set on upcoming movies like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday, as well as Avengers: Secret Wars. Although it hasn’t received an official release date, Black Panther 3 also appears to be a top priority at the moment.

All throughout Phase 4 and during part of Phase 5, Marvel Studios spread itself too thin. An increase in output led to a noticeable quality drop despite an abundance of talent and valuable source material. To avoid a similar problem, Marvel is tackling only a few projects at a time, leaving follow-ups to box office hits like ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine on the back burner.

Ryan Reynolds’ ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Need To Be A Priority

ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine Rekindled Interest In Fox’s X-Men Characters Right Before Marvel’s Reboot

Disney’s acquisition of Twentieth Century Fox appeared to give Fox’s X-Men franchise a definitive ending. Yet, Marvel Studios gave its two most popular characters a new beginning in the MCU. After ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, a long MCU journey for Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman’s new Wolverine variant appeared to be likely.

ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool’s “’till you’re ninety” line lampshades Hugh Jackman’s potential for more MCU appearances.

Yet, no ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine sequel or spinoff seems to be in the works. What’s worse, neither X-Men star is confirmed to return in Avengers: Doomsday‘s packed cast. If they don’t return in Avengers: Doomsday, the last possible opportunity to see ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool and Wolverine interact with other MCU characters may be Avengers: Secret Wars, and only in a small capacity.

Marvel Studios will reboot the X-Men after Avengers: Secret Wars. Starting with Jake Schreier’s X-Men movie, the MCU’s mutant characters will be played by a brand-new cast of young actors. As it stands, a ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine sequel may only be possible between Avengers: Doomsday and Marvel’s X-Men, which unfortunately seems very unlikely.
