When Netflix has a breakout hit film, they more often than not lean into its success. This could take the form of signing a deal with a key member of the movie’s talent, but more likely, it involves making a sequel film to that movie.
Last year, the streamer had a big hit with the French shark movie Under Paris. In that case, the Under Paris ending featured a tease that could imply a continuation of its story. As a result, Netflix is now at work on Under Paris 2.
Such is also the case with the 2022 movie Troll. After the seemingly self-contained action-adventure movie became a record-breaking Netflix hit, Troll 2 is underway and is currently set for release in December.
Netflix just this week made another radical sequel decision when a report revealed how the company would lean into the success of their megahit animated movie KPop Demon Hunters. The film will be followed up by not one, but two sequels, a live-action movie, and possibly other related content.
Netflix had another movie last year that became a huge breakout hit on the service. Now, that film’s main star comments on the prospect of a sequel, and the signs are not very positive.
Taron Egerton Comments On The Prospect Of Carry-On 2
The Movie Was A Smash Hit On Netflix
Taron Egerton comments on whether they are making a sequel to Carry-On. The movie is a 2024 thriller set on Christmas Eve, which follows the story of a TSA agent faced with a huge issue when a traveler attempts to blackmail him into letting a dangerous package through security.
Carry-On got largely favorable reviews, scoring an 88% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. But its real success was found in its streaming numbers. The film quickly sH๏τ onto Netflix’s streaming charts and stayed there for a while. Eventually, it became Netflix’s no. 2 most watched movie of all time.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Egerton addresses the likelihood of Carry-On 2. The actor said that it would be “hard to achieve” the original intentions of the film “without it feeling contrived.” He views Carry-On as “a celebration of Christmas and a celebration of people who work at Christmas.” Check out the full quote from Egerton below:
“Carry-On 2 is really hard. It’s a celebration of Christmas and a celebration of people who work at Christmas. It then needs to have this huge plot that needs to be foiled and maybe the earwig component. All of that is quite hard to achieve in a sequel without it feeling contrived and to the point of defying credulity. So I have not heard anything, but who knows, stranger things have happened.”
What This Means For Netflix
They Might Not Lean Into Carry-On’s Success Like They Have With Other Films
Egerton’s quote makes it clear that there are no active plans for Carry-On 2. As the actor notes, “stranger things have happened,” so it is not impossible that a sequel could still come. Even if it happens, it is not coming any time soon.
This is out of the norm of Netflix’s patterning in recent years. Under Paris, Troll, and KPop Demon Hunters are all examples of how Netflix seeks to capitalize on the success of their streaming hits. With Carry-On, the company is instead choosing to, at least initially, let it keep the integrity of being a standalone story rather than try to milk any viewership they can get.
