James Gunn’s Superman Box Office Hits Rare Global Milestone For DC Movie In Less Than 3 Weeks

Superman has pᴀssed an enormous box office milestone. The 2025 superhero movie was directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker) and is the first installment in the newly rebranded DC Universe.

2025’s Superman follows billionaire Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) using every tactic in his power to defame Superman (David Corenswet) and turn the public against the hero. The movie also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, as of Thursday morning, Superman has officially pᴀssed the $300 million milestone at the domestic box office, becoming only the fourth release of 2025 to do so, behind Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, Lilo & Sтιтch, and A Minecraft Movie.

It is the first DC Comics movie to pᴀss that milestone in three years, after 2022’s The Batman. Additionally, it is only the ninth DC movie to ever gross more than $300 million domestically, after The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Joker, and The Batman.

What This Means For Superman

It Could Soar Even Higher

It is highly unlikely that Superman will be able to compete with the record-breaking blockbusters The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, which grossed $553.3 million and $448.1 million at the domestic box office respectively, making them the 19th and 31st highest-grossing movies of all time in North America.

However, Superman is performing at a level that could continue to surpᴀss other тιтles from the previous iteration of the DC franchise, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Below, see a breakdown of the DC Elseworlds and DCEU movies that remain above the James Gunn movie and where they rank on the all-time domestic chart:

Rank

тιтle

Domestic Box Office

#44

Wonder Woman (2017)

$412.5 million

#64

The Batman (2022)

$369.3 million

#82

Joker (2019)

$335.4 million

#83

Aquaman (2018)

$335.1 million

#88

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

$330.4 million

#91

Suicide Squad (2016)

$325.1 million

#112

Superman (2025)

$300 million

Ultimately, it remains to be seen how high Superman can climb by the end of its run. However, Box Office Theory projects that it will earn an additional $17.4 million at the domestic box office by the end of its fourth weekend in theaters, which is a total that would push it within $8 million of outgrossing Suicide Squad.

Once it does so, the movie would only need to earn an additional $10.3 million to surpᴀss Joker and become the third highest-grossing movie on the chart. While pushing past the $400 million milestone and outgrossing Wonder Woman would prove more difficult, a place in the Top 3 is entirely within the realm of possibility.

Our Take On The Superman Box Office Update

It’s Starting The DCU On The Right Foot

Superman has a lot to prove, as the future of the relaunched franchise is riding on its shoulders. However, the upcoming DCU movies are being given a solid financial foundation to start from. Even though the movie is not necessarily a record-breaker for the franchise as a whole, its solid performance is giving producers plenty of reasons to be optimistic.
