Video game adaptations have recently surged in popularity. The trend started on television, with HBO’s The Last of Us and Prime Video’s Fallout captivating critics and audiences alike. On the big screen, video game adaptations have become big box office hits in recent years. The Super Mario Bros. Movie made over $1.3 billion, becoming the second highest-grossing movie of 2023.
Meanwhile, Five Nights at Freddy’s made $297 million to become 2023’s highest-grossing horror film. In 2025, A Minecraft Movie made $955 million, ranking as this year’s second-highest-grossing Hollywood release. While these types of family-friendly tentpoles tend to dominate the box office, more adult-oriented video game movies often fly under the radar in theaters, but end up performing well on streaming platforms.
Until Dawn Is Now A Netflix Streaming Hit
It Ranks 10th For The Week
Until Dawn is now a Netflix streaming hit. Based on the 2015 video game, the survival horror film follows a group of friends trapped in a secluded area and caught in a time loop, where a mysterious foe hunts and kills them in increasingly gruesome ways, and their only way to make it out alive is to survive until dawn.
Directed by David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation, Shazam!), with a script written by Gary Dauberman and Blair Butler, Until Dawn‘s cast includes Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, and Belmont Cameli as the group of friends. Maia Mitchell and Lotta Losten also star, while Peter Stormare reprises his role from the video game as psychologist Dr. Hill.
For the week of July 21–27, Until Dawn ranks 10th on Netflix’s Global Top 10 movies with 3.3 million views and 5.6 million hours viewed. It ranks below The Old Guard 2, Rampage, H๏τel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, Madea’s Destination Wedding, Trainwreck: P.I. Moms, Lost on a Mountain in Maine, Happy Gilmore, KPop Demon Hunters, and Happy Gilmore 2.
Until Dawn is in Netflix’s Top 10 movies in four countries this week – the United States, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
What Until Dawn’s Netflix Success Means For The Movie
Is A Sequel On The Way?
While Until Dawn is far from the biggest horror or video game movie of the year, its $53 million box office haul marks a modest success for an R-rated horror film with a smaller $15 million budget. Unlike the family-friendly Mario and Minecraft movies, Until Dawn caters to a more mature and niche audience.
An Until Dawn sequel might not be far off.
Its quick rise into Netflix’s Global Top 10 suggests that it has found a broader audience in the streaming space. This surge in streaming popularity could signal a promising future for the franchise. Co-writer and producer Gary Dauberman has already hinted at plans for an interconnected universe, so an Until Dawn sequel might not be far off.
