The Highlander reboot has gotten an official update from star Henry Cavill. Highlander was originally a 1986 epic fantasy film about an immortal Scottish swordsman who must fight the last of his immortal enemies, directed by Russell Mulcahy and featuring Christopher Lambert in the lead role, alongside Sean Connery, Clancy Brown, and Roxanne Hart.
A Highlander reboot has been talked about for over a decade, but it was not until a while later that the plans for this project further materialized. Said reboot would sub out Lambert for Cavill, and put John Wick‘s Chad Stahelski in the director’s seat. Russell Crowe and Marisa Abela will also appear in the film.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill spoke about his role in Highlander. Cavill said that the film is “taking all of [his] focus” and “it’s a project that [he’s] extremely excited about.” He also singled out and praised the director. Check out the full quote from Cavill below:
Highlander! That is taking all of my focus. It’s a project that I’m extremely excited about. This character is going to be a lot of fun to play, and I’m loving working with Chad Stahelski. He is a very talented man.
What Henry Cavill’s Comment Means For Highlander
The Filming Start Date Is Coming Soon
Throughout the development process, Highlander has experienced a lot of filming delays. At one point, it was scheduled to start filming in January 2025, which, even then, was 9 years after Stahelski was originally attached to the project as director. Then, the progress was unfortunately stalled further by the Ballerina reshoots.
As of an update from May, the Highlander movie should finally start filming in September of this year. If all goes smoothly with production and post-production, Stahelski guessed that the final product would hit theaters in 2027 or 2028.
Cavill’s THR quote was in response to being asked what his next filming project was, so his enthusiasm seems to confirm that Highlander may finally start filming on time. This will be critical in ensuring the movie can meet the release timeline laid out by Stahelski.
Our Take On Henry Cavill’s Highlander Quote
His Enthusiasm Is A Good Sign
It is also important that Cavill, Stahelski, and the rest of the team keep talking about Highlander. With it being in development hell for so long, it is easy for potential viewers to lose interest in the project. Cavill is a popular actor, but flops like Argylle prove that his name alone is not enough to elevate a film at the box office.
And Highlander is likely to be a movie with a grandiose scale (and, by extension, budget), given the nature of the story and how long its production is expected to take. This could be a challenge for the movie to overcome at the box office. Nonetheless, it is comforting to hear Cavill be so enthusiastic about Highlander as the film heads into production soon.
