Tyler Perry Confirms New Sequel To $116M Comedy Franchise, Original Cast Expected To Return

Tyler Perry may not be the most consistent director in terms of critical reception, but he has had an incredibly impressive rate of production. A multi-hyphenate talent who has served as producer, writer, director, and actor — and sometimes all on the same project — he has an impressive filmography that mostly includes comedies.

Perry is best known for his work on the Madea franchise. This began with the character’s appearance in The Diary of A Mad Black Woman, a 2005 film that Perry wrote and acted in. Most recently, that franchise continued with the 2025 Netflix release Madea’s Destination Wedding.

Perry’s output has been even more prominent in the last few years because of his deal with Netflix. The streamer formed this multi-year partnership with Perry in October 2023, which would allow Perry to produce multiple movies for the streamer.

This deal has been pretty successful for the creator. His movie Straw, which came out this year, was a mᴀssive Netflix hit. Now, Perry is continuing his busy career with the announcement of another film.

Tyler Perry Is Making Another Why Did I Get Married Sequel

The Franchise Began In 2007

Perry has announced the development of Why Did I Get Married 3. This franchise actually originated as a stage play penned by Perry, which focuses on what happens to a family and a marriage when a young temptress arrives on the scene. The movie adaptation came out in 2007, and starred Perry, Janet Jackson, Malik Yoba, Tasha Smith, and Jill Scott.

Why Did I Get Married? did fairly well in theaters, making $55.8 million on an estimated $15 million budget. This led to the creation of the sequel film Why Did I Get Married Too? in 2010. This movie also did pretty well box office-wise, making $60.6 million on an estimated $20 million budget.

Taking to social media, Perry announced the development of a third Why Did I Get Married? movie. To announce the project, he posted the тιтle page of a screenplay manuscript for a movie тιтled Why Did I Get Married Again?. He did not provide many other details about the project, simply captioning it with “I’m just gonna sit this right here!

He did also tag several members of the franchise’s main cast. These included Smith, Sharon Leal, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker, Scott, and Jackson. While he did not confirm who was appearing in Why Did I Get Married Again?, this could imply that the main cast is coming back.

What This Means For Tyler Perry

Could This Movie Come Out In Theaters?

Janet Jackson as Patricia Agnew and Malik Yoba as Gavin Agnew in Why Did I Get Married Too?

This update means that Perry is turning Why Did I Get Married into a proper franchise (or at minimum, a trilogy). Perry did not confirm whether the movie was part of his Netflix deal or a separate project. Given the movies’ positive box office track record, however, it might be a good opportunity for Perry to have a theatrical release.
