James Cameron’s $5.2B Sci-Fi Blockbuster Franchise Is Resurrected Thanks To A Major Trailer Drop

An epic James Cameron franchise is dominating on streaming after a new trailer dropped online. Cameron announced himself as a major force in the world of Hollywood with the release of 1984’s The Terminator. He then reaffirmed his status with Aliens in 1986.

Since this acclaimed Alien sequel, Cameron has continued to excel as a filmmaker, often working in the realm of sci-fi. After releasing The Abyss in 1989, a movie that has since become a cult classic of sorts, he returned to helm Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1991, which is widely considered one of the best sequels of all time.

It was in 1997, however, that Cameron reached new heights, with тιтanic becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time. The hit film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, held onto this тιтle for 12 years.

The filmmaker that eventually beat тιтanic‘s record-breaking box office was, of course, Cameron himself. In 2009, the director released a groundbreaking sci-fi, sparking an ambitious franchise that has now dominated the last two decades of his career.

The Avatar Franchise Ascends Disney’s Streaming Charts

The Fire & Ash Trailer Has Generated A Lot Of Hype

The two movies so far in the Avatar franchise have just become big hits on Disney+. Starring Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña, the 2009 original movie was a mᴀssive success, paving the way for Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022. Now the third installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is poised to release this December, and the buzzy first trailer just dropped online.

Per the Disney+ daily top 10 charts, Avatar: The Way of Water is currently the sixth most popular movie on the streaming service in the U.S. The original Avatar isn’t far behind, occupying tenth place.

The Way of Water beats тιтles like Snow White (2025), Captain America: Brave New World (2025), and Descendants (2015).

What This Means For The Avatar Franchise

Fire & Ash Is Already Poised For Success

First playing before screenings of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the Avatar: Fire and Ash trailer officially dropped online on Monday. The trailer provides the first proper look at what’s to come for the Sully family, including a conflict with the villainous Ash People and their leader, Varang (Oona Chaplin).

The Way of Water currently stands as the third highest-grossing movie of all time behind Avengers: Endgame (2019) and, in first place, the original Avatar. The fact that the first two Avatar movies are now trending on streaming following the Fire and Ash trailer is a sign that excitement remains high for the franchise’s future.

It seems unlikely that Fire and Ash will reach the same box office highs as The Way of Water. The 2022 sequel, after all, benefited from coming 13 years after the original movie, and the visual quality was a major step up. The technological leaps in the sequel won’t be quite as great, and the film seemingly won’t have that added audience intrigue factor.

The Way of Water grossed $2.3 billion worldwide, while the original grossed $2.9 billion.

Still, though, Fire and Ash will almost certainly be a big hit. The response to the trailer has been seemingly very positive, and Cameron has repeatedly proven that he is not to be doubted. Though the upcoming third installment may be followed by a longer wait for films four and five, the Avatar franchise is evidently not going anywhere.
