Masters of the Universe star Alison Brie clarifies a rumored detail about the upcoming live-action big-screen adaptation based on Mattel’s franchise of the same name. Directed by Travis Knight and produced by Mattel Films and Amazon MGM, the new movie, which will come to theaters on June 5, 2026, serves as a reboot of the popular franchise.
Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You) stars as Prince Adam, aka He-Man. He’s joined by Camila Mendes (Teela), Jared Leto (Skeletor), Idris Elba (Man-At-Arms), Alison Brie (Evil-Lyn), and many others. With filming wrapped in early June, the movie is currently in post-production.
Now, in an interview with Collider, Brie seemingly debunked speculation about the movie’s departure from the campy tone of previous iterations. When asked whether the upcoming reboot has a more serious or campy tone, the actor tried to play coy at first, but she suggested that reports claiming the movie would be serious are untrue. Read what she said below:
I don’t think they know as much as they think they know. That’s all I’m gonna say.
Who said it’s leaning a little more serious?
What This Means For Masters Of The Universe
Masters Of The Universe Might Not Be As Serious As Many Anticipated
Except for the cast information, much about the upcoming big screen adaptation is under тιԍнт wraps. Recently, the official тιтle tease was dropped, hinting at the classic-looking design and the movie’s homage to the 1987 movie iteration. When filming wrapped in early June, Galitzine shared a first-look image of his character with his back facing the camera.
While the image is darker in tone, which might lead to speculation about the movie being more serious, Brie’s comment could potentially put it in a new light.
Behind-the-scenes images from the Masters of the Universe set have also revealed faithful character designs. While the new movie will include some modern updates to the franchise, there hasn’t been much indication that the movie would make a significant departure in terms of story or tone.
Our Take On Masters Of The Universe
Masters Of The Universe Might Break The Superhero Trend
With the new big-screen adaptation in post-production, fans will eventually get a taste of the movie’s tone when teasers and trailers are dropped. The trend of superhero movies does suggest that the genre is evolving to feature films that are more serious and complex in tone and story. It sounds like Brie is suggesting the upcoming adaptation isn’t going to follow the trend, but without a solid answer or seeing actual footage from the movie, it’s hard to tell how exactly Knight is approaching the material.
Masters of the Universe will follow Prince Adam, who grew up on Earth after a crash, as he discovers his destiny and returns to his home planet, Eternia, to fight Skeletor.
While the wait for the new Masters of the Universe continues, Brie can next be seen in Together, where she stars alongside her real-life husband Dave Franco, as a couple who stumble into a mysterious cave and start to fuse together physically.
