Julia Roberts’ 28-Year-Old Comedy Hit Is Getting A Sequel From Materialists Writer

Celine Song is now working on the reported My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel. The 1997 film is a romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts, following the story of a woman who realizes that she’s in love with her long-time best friend — who has just gotten engaged — and seeks to dismantle his wedding.

Dermot Mulroney starred opposite Roberts in the film, and just this week, he spoke about the prospect of a My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel. According to the actor, he thinks that “lawyers were talking” about the sequel, but claimed to know nothing very specific about it.

However, as per Collider, the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel now has Celine Song on board. Sony is looking to produce the film, with Song as the screenwriter. The movie is still in “very early development,” according to Collider.

What Celine Song’s Involvement Means For The My Best Friend’s Wedding Sequel

It Is More Sure To Happen

Jules (Julia Roberts) stares at Michael (Dermot Mulroney) in My Best Friend's Wedding.

This update indicates, at least, that the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel film is happening. Mulroney’s previous update seemed a lot less certain regarding the film’s status. Even if it is in early development still, the movie seems to be moving forward.

Song is a writer and director who got her start as a staff writer on The Wheel of Time. Two years later, she wrote and directed her first feature film with Past Lives. The movie was really well-received at the time of its release, earning Song an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Song continues her positive streak this year with Materialists. The romantic comedy was also well-received, getting a 79% Certified Fresh Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie also made over $52 million worldwide in theaters. As such, the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel is catching Song at a time of great success.

Our Take On My Best Friend’s Wedding 2 Getting Song

She Is A Great Choice

My Best Friend’s Wedding is one of the most beloved romantic comedy films of its decade, so it will be a high bar to live up to. It made just shy of $300 million worldwide in theaters, which is an impressive total for a film in this genre. This puts the pressure on a sequel to perform.

That said, I think Song is the perfect person to be up to the task. She has shown her propensity for both drama and hints of comedy within the romance genre. This makes her uniquely qualified to take on this beloved story, breathing new life into the sequel film to the ’90s classic My Best Friend’s Wedding.
