X-Men Prequel Storm Actress Addresses Comparisons To Previous Star & Offers Advice To Her Future MCU Replacement

After playing Storm in the X-Men prequel movies, Alexandra Shipp looks back at her time playing the Marvel heroine. As The Multiverse Saga gets closer to its end, Marvel Studios is already working on one of its most anticipated films after Phase 6, which will be their X-Men reboot.

While Jake Schreier is directing the X-Men movie, it’s unknown at this point what characters will be featured in the reimagining of the mutants. One of the most popular characters in the X-Men canon that fans are waiting to see in the MCU is Storm, who was previously played by Shipp and Halle Barry during Fox’s Marvel films.

During a recent interview with Collider, Shipp, who starred in X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, opened up about being compared to Berry’s version of Storm. At the same time, Shipp also shared her personal advice for whoever will play the heroine in the MCU, as she stated the following:

I think a lot of the time, people want to compare performances. They want to compare how Halle [Berry] did her Storm to my Storm, or any other character, really, and I don’t think that that is fair to the actor, and I don’t think that that’s fair to the audience. I think it’s making that role your own, finding ways in which you can be an individual, and allowing that to kind of form.

My Storm was much, much younger and was not trained, so she was coming from the streets in Apocalypse. So, for me, I really wanted her to be a street fighter, and we brought a lot of that into her fight style and the way that she flew.

While Schreier is attached to direct X-Men, based on a script by Michael Lesslie, it has yet to be confirmed when the movie will actually start filming. There is also no official release date for the film. Outside of her two main X-Men film appearances, Shipp’s Storm made a cameo in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2.

What Alexandra Shipp’s Storm Comments Mean

Storm Was Never Given A Proper Chance During Fox’s Marvel Era

Regarding Shipp’s comments, it’s perfectly valid to feel frustrated over being compared to Berry’s version of Ororo Munroe, especially from a story perspective. The whole point of the X-Men prequels was to showcase how the characters from the original trilogy became those legendary figures.

In general, when it came to Storm’s depiction in either X-Men film franchise, there were a lot of elements that Shipp and Berry’s versions never got to explore, leaving a lot of elements from her comic legacy unused. Whoever ends up getting cast as Storm in the MCU will ideally get a way more stable and consistent story treatment.

The MCU Can Finally Do Justice To Storm

Hearing Shipp still has a lot of care for Storm and her future legacy is appreciated, as the X-Men character is, without a doubt, one of Marvel’s most beloved heroes. Since Feige has confirmed the X-Men movie will focus on a lot of characters when they are young, Storm will ideally have a fresh start.

Whether or not Storm will be one of the characters to get a spot in the first X-Men movie from the MCU remains to be seen, as there may be other players used first. But hopefully, whether it is in X-Men or future MCU projects, Storm’s tenure in the franchise will be better handled.
