Brad Pitt’s New Movie Races Past Kevin Costner’s Actioner In Studio’s All-Time Charts

Brad Pitt’s pulse-pounding racing blockbuster F1: The Movie has had an incredible run at the domestic box office, and recently overtook one of the most successful movies of Kevin Costner’s legendary career. Set in the high-stakes world of Formula One Racing, F1: The Movie wowed audiences with entertaining sports drama and Joseph Kosinski’s next-level camerawork.

F1: The Movie set the stage for what has proven to be a very successful summer at the box office, taking advantage of premium formats with a $57 million domestic opening weekend, and over $146 million globally. The immersive examination of Formula One racing currently boasts a global box office of over $468 million and counting.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, in the fifth week since its release, F1: The Movie crossed the threshold of $165 million at the domestic box office. In addition to it being Apple Studios’ highest-grossing release ever, that mark pushes it past Kevin Costner’s iconic 1991 action adventure movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, which is one of Costner’s most profitable movies ever as an actor.

What The Domestic Box Office Total Means For F1: The Movie

It Had A Tremendous Domestic Run With Great Legs

While F1: The Movie‘s $55 million domestic opening weekend was impressive, the fact that it’s managed to triple that total in just five weeks at the height of the summer is impressive. Positive word of mouth and the ever-increasing popularity of Formula One Racing undoubtedly played a role in the movie’s extended run of success, along with Brad Pitt’s sheer star power.

The success of F1: The Movie is a game-changer for Apple Studios as their first true box office hit, and will undoubtedly encourage future gambles on the studio’s part as a new major player in Hollywood. While Apple has had no trouble attracting the top talent in Hollywood for its TV shows and movies, the success of F1: The Movie can only encourage them to dedicate even more resources to producing quality entertainment.

Our Take On F1: The Movie’s Domestic Total

The True Summer Blockbuster Is In Rarefied Air

Brad Pitt in F1: The Movie

The movie’s extended run is even more impressive considering that it isn’t based on an existing piece of IP. While the sport of Formula One Racing obviously has its own following, F1: The Movie is entirely original, and not based on any existing characters, books, comics, etc. In a day and age where the marquee is typically filled with sequels and superhero movies, an original movie grossing this well is rare.

By the end of its run, F1: The Movie should find its way into the top 40 most successful original movies of all time, slotting in above classics like The Hangover and The Matrix and just under epics like Twister and Saving Private Ryan. Ideally, that will encourage studios and filmmakers to continue taking chances on original movies.
