After more than a decade playing Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. will lead the cast of Avengers: Doomsday as a new character, Doctor Doom. So far, not much is known about the villain’s plans for the MCU.
However, they should involve characters from all over Marvel’s live-action history, as Fox’s original X-Men are set to join the MCU’s heroes in Avengers: Doomsday‘s story, with Avengers: Secret Wars rumored to include even more multiverse players. Downey himself could be part of those multiverse characters in many ways, perhaps playing Doctor Doom and Iron Man in the upcoming MCU movies.
On Instagram, Robert Downey Jr. shared a new video that includes a couple of interesting issues from Marvel Comics while Avengers: Doomsday filming continues.

Although the footage itself does not reveal any details about the Doctor Doom costume Downey will wear in Avengers: Doomsday, nor does it feature other cast members or locations from the film, there are two comics that stand out. One of them is an issue from Secret Wars, the event that inspires the 2027 MCU movie, while the other sees Doctor Doom and Iron Man fighting.

With the secrecy around Avengers: Doomsday‘s plot, every new video and tease shared by Robert Downey Jr. and other MCU stars could prove valuable to better understanding what the movie may hold. In relation to the Secret Wars comic that appears in the video, there is not a lot to speculate on. It shows Downey researching his new character.
After all, Doctor Doom is the main villain of the Secret Wars event, where he becomes God Emperor Doom and rules over Battleworld, which is a patchwork planet made of several Marvel locations with characters from all over the multiverse. It is safe to ᴀssume something of the sort should happen in 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.

As for the other Marvel comic book in RDJ’s video, that is where things get interesting. Iron Man: Legacy of Doom is a storyline that directly pits both of Downey’s MCU characters against each other. In it, Iron Man initially helps Doctor Doom as they go to Hell after Mephisto, who just joined the MCU in Ironheart. Then, Doom betrays Iron Man.

Given Mephisto’s recent MCU debut and how it happened in Ironheart, a series directly connected to Tony Stark’s legacy, the comic book shared by Downey is quite interesting. I could not be more excited about Robert Downey Jr.’s comics inspirations as Avengers: Doomsday filming continues. The upcoming Avengers movies need to live up to what Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame accomplished, while also being the major events that the Multiverse Saga has missed. If Iron Man and Mephisto end up appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, it can only be better.
