“Let AMC Reach Out To Me”: Shudder’s $10M Clown Slasher Hit Gets A Major Sequel Update From Director

Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, Clown in a Cornfield director Eli Craig addressed the possibility of making a sequel film. The 2025 horror film is based on the 2020 novel by Adam Cesare. The plot focuses on a young woman named Quinn who moves into a small town with her father, only to discover that it is being haunted by a terrifying clown.

The film version of Clown in a Cornfield featured a leading cast including Katie Douglas, Aaron Abrams, Carson MacCormac, Vincent Muller, Will Sᴀsso, and Kevin Durand. It was released in May of this year and made $10.7 million on an estimated $1 million budget.

In an interview with ScreenRant at SDCC, Craig speaks about whether he would adapt more of Cesare’s novels. In response to a potential Clown in a Cornfield sequel, the director said, “let Shudder make the decision.” That said, he seemed confident that the sequels could have strong content. Check out the full quote from Craig below:

ScreenRant: Are you looking at his sequel novels as something you would want to do?

Eli Craig: Let AMC reach out to me, and let Shudder make the decision if they want to do the sequel. But I think we’re in a really good place if we end up doing the sequels. The books are a lot of fun, Quinn’s a great character, and Rust and Cole are just great characters to follow. And seeing Frendo here, I don’t know. I mean, would you want to see more Frendo?

What This Means For The Clown In A Cornfield Franchise

These Characters Could Go Further

Following his 2020 novel, Cesare penned the follow-up books Frendo Lives and The Church of Frendo. This gives the filmmaker a unique opportunity, as he has ample source material to go off of if he were to make more movies in the series.

It seems like Craig has further ideas for Clown in a Cornfield if he were to extend the franchise. Surviving characters Quinn, Rust, and Cole have already been developed thoroughly in the first movie, and could easily spin off to be interesting figures if given the chance to explore them more. The second book, Frendo Lives, follows Quinn in her first year at college, which could provide interesting content for another film.

Clown in a Cornfield also benefits from the fact that Frendo is more of a concept than a specific villain. In the film’s second act, a whole horde of Frendos chase down the leads. It is later revealed that under the masks are a group of Kettle Springs’ middle-aged residents. As such, other people could take on the mascot’s persona, continuing the killing sprees.

Our Take On The Prospect Of More Clown In A Cornfield Movies

Low-Budget Killer Clowns Have A Good Track Record

Low-budget clown horror movies also have a particular appeal in the public eye. The most notable example of such films is the Terrifier movies, which focus on Art the Clown. Its most recent installment, Terrifier 3, made $90.3 million on an estimated $2 million budget.

The Terrifier films have only done better and better with each installment. AMC and Shudder should consider this when deciding whether to make more Clown in a Cornfield movies. These films have the potential to do really well and grow in success, and thus, Craig should be allowed to adapt Cesare’s other books.
